Yeah, but the fact that you have to do everything in a different program is rather a lack of features than a feature, isn't it. DVD Studio Pro could certainly make use of this feature just in the way described. And before _creating_ the DVD master, it would just create some movies out of the code. _Then_ it wouldn't matter, and certainly your mom's DVD player wouldn't have any problem with this either.

You're both talking about different things, but it's actually no problem at all. It would be fun, and it would add a feature to DVD Studio Pro. If Apple _doesn't_ want to add features (?!), then they could make this an external application. Would you then be satisfied?

Could this be the new Cocoa text capabilities rumored in 10.3 or does Apple have even more surprises?

I doubt it. There's a lot more basic things they need to add/fix before worrying about something like this. We need:

    1) support for kerning in type 1 and OpenType fonts (!)

    2) support for advanced typography features in AAT and OpenType (small caps, alternate figures, variations, hanging punctuation, etc.) that bring Cocoa text support up to the level GX had years ago.

    3) bug fixes in font access for OpenType optical fonts

I'd be much happier to see all of this addressed.

You may doubt it, but the format is in place and it wouldn't take much to bring it to the framework level.

    Let me put it differently:

I'll be pissed if they add this feature -- which is of questionable use outside of FCP -- without also fixing all the other problems with the Cocoa text system first/also. If they fix those problems AND add LiveType, then great!

Well, I'd have to admit I'd be pissed also. This is a fluff feature I'm not all that excited about. I was excited at first but I'd rather see something better and more useful come our way.

Bug fixes to the existing text problems would fall in the 'useful' category.

Right. It could indeed be useful for iMovie and Keynote if they were to also add it QuickTime, but it shouldn't be a key priority.

BTW, am the only one who wishes Apple would add full-screen playback capability to the free QT player? I imagine a lot of Keynote users must present on PCs, and it's not too cool to expect us to have a QT Pro license installed on any machine we might want to use.
