Boy are you behind the times.

”And although Apple has taken over the design of its own processors (with all the complexity that entails), then Samsung has been in charge of manufacturing them.”

Samsung hasn’t made a processor for iPhones since 2015 when the A9 was dual-sourced from Samsung and  TSMC. And we know how that turned out - the TDMC version was superior and Apple has used them since.

I stopped reading after seeing this glaring mistake.
Your missing the point,  which is that Apple has relied on this “inferior” company as you call them.   Would it be great if Apple makes everything on their own,  but they don’t.    I choose to use Apple,  however the S22 phones are interesting.

Are you aware Samsung Semiconductor and Samsung Mobile are separate divisions? They might as well be separate companies.

It’s why Apple still bought parts from Samsung Semiconductor even though they were suing Samsung Mobile for their blatant copying of the iPhone. Or why Samsung Semiconductor didn’t stop selling parts to Apple to teach them a lesson for suing Samsung Mobile like all the haters (I mean children) wanted them too.
Are you aware that Apple is a set of different companies too? Just at a more organisational level as opposed to product/manufacturing level.

Apple uses these companies to shift money through one another and for geographical, legislative and accounting reasons.

Samsung is no different. It is a conglomerate with divisions, just like lots of other huge companies.

If it were just one company, Apple would have sued it while still doing business with it.

That's why Samsung was usually referred to as a frenemy but Samsung is Samsung at the end of the day.

If it were up to me, I'd choose longer battery life over a screen that stays lit in my pocket or my wife's purse. The always on screen makes sense for the Apple Watch, but who needs it for the phone?
Apple could use the IR lighting to detect the phone being in a pocket or face down and turn off the display. Then turn it on when detecting 1 lumen (or some level) of ambient light. This could easily mimic Always On without actually being AO. In addition set AO to a schedule so at night, it's AO except in a pocket or face down on the nightstand etc. It's a way to save battery power when it's not possible to see the display. That's not what's going to happen.

It’s about time. Apple always seems to be playing catch-up with Samsung which has had Always-on display as far back as 2016 starting with the Samsung Galaxy S7.
"Playing catch-up" implies that Apple is trying to keep up. They aren't, with some features and that is clearly their choice. Apple is largely on APT. Samsung already had this feature. Great. Good for them. This hasn't been anything I've been wanting and so wasn't envious. Whether Apple's iteration is better or worse or just different remains to be seen. But "playing catch-up" they aren't.

I don’t get the hype for AOD. If I’m looking at my screen it’s because I want to see something (messages, missed calls…). Raising my iPhone or tapping the screen turns it on and with FaceID my notification details will become immediately visible.

Why would I want to look at a dimmed version of something with limited information when I can just as easily see the full version?

Same with Apple Watch. I raise my wrist and it turns on showing me everything normally. When would I ever be looking at my Watch where a dim display is going to give me some useful information?

Seems more like a vanity thing than anything else.
I was with you right up until the complete stupidity of that last line. Well the complete stupidity of the second to last line as well.

That those are your own prefs is not an issue.  Nobody cares if you get the hype or not. The implication that this is a useless feature not just to you, is ridiculous.

When I wore a mechanical watch, I seldom raised my wrist to see the time, which has always been my reason for wearing a watch. Most of those times, that amount of raise doesn't turn on my Watch. So at a glance, without raising my wrist, seeing if a notification is one I need to respond to has value for me. Seeing the same on my phone when I'm not wearing my Watch or seeing a larger display information that my Watch couldn't match, without having to raise the phone or maneuver my fast to unlock it, has value to me. I suspect others feel the same. That you don't grok matters not.

Apple still hasn't come out with an exploding phone so I guess technically they remain behind Samsung on that feature.
