It's funny, what I was thinking about in terms of a web format was more like what Amorph described, but not having the lingo, you see how far from that concept I let my own thinking take me. I'm always fascinated by the power language has over thought. But anyway, that's not entirely the case either, I wanted to propose something that would work within our current state of resolution dependence, though I suppose that by the time any such scheme were hammered out, the basic bottom end video power at the disposal of most systems would easily drive very high resolutions, so mebbe I'm thinking about a solution whose time will have passed by the time it could be ready, and it's better to develop a properly abstracted system now.
About the Newton. I had one for about 2 months, and I would have been over the moon with it if I had had one when they first came out, but some 4 years after they'd been Steve'd I didn't really trust it, community or no, with any of my documents. But it was interesting. When Apple released the 2100 they were still way expensive and still Apple probably lost money on each unit sold. Ever since we've been inching towards the possibility of a unit that is both useful and saleable, and ultimately profitable. Two years ago I shouted down any tablet rumor as utterly ridiculous. Today, I still don't think it's possible to do at a price that would let it succeed, but the components seem to be falling into place.
We wait for the glue, the meta-tech (if you will) of electronic communication, to let such devices be possible and practical... A year at least, probably two.
