What about the mouse?

So now that we pretty much know what the new Powemacs will be, I'm surprised there is no info about the mouse, do you think it's going 2 button?

I think a two button mouse would be enough to keep people at bay until a new pentium killer powermac is ready soon(I hope). It better have a scroll wheel though!!

Everyone is talking about a mouse because of Shake's requirement for a 3 button one.

For the price of Shake I think the 3 button mouse will be in the software box as an included jog controller.

    Maybe?

Your the dumbass. The pro mouse IS a great mouse. It just doesnt have the features that you want and apple doesnt feel it necessary to put on. Stop whining, round up some pocket change and buy a cheap new mouse

er...your experience aside, I think the more common opinion is that the puck mouse was a real pain (literally) to use for most folks. Plus, functionality appears to be more important than durability. I know my puck mouse ( I keep wanting to misspell that, you know? ) was a lint trap that kept giving me those twinges that make you say, "Ahhh! Karpal tunnel!"

I know there are fans of the puck mouse, but the most damning criticism would have to be the fact that Apple themselves ditched it pretty quickly.

iRumors are pretty certain there will be a white two button released with a new keyboard today:

    [quote]New Pro Mice and Keyboards

    Posted on August 12 2002

    Â*

As we reported on August 10, new keyboards and mice will be released tommorow along with new Powermacs.

    Â*

The mice and keyboards will quite possibly be Bluetooth compatible, although this feature will probably be unveiled in later hardware revisions. Both of the accessories will also sport a Quicksilver type colour change. Apart from this, the mice and keyboards will have a similar design to the current versions.

I have posted before about a Blutooth keyboard and understood it was being built into all future Powerbooks and also Powermacs. I suspect this speedbump today will not include that however. But if they release the new Keyboard I bet that it is Bluetooth enabled and hopefully will work with my D-Link

The prototype mouse I have seen did not have a wheel but a touch sensitive strip and two button. Not sure if this is the model they talk about though.

I quite like the promouse but would kill for a nice wireless 2 button mouse, to go with my powerbook 800!

BT, while I am on the topic of mouses:

I am always surprised Apple didnt relese a wireless keyboard/Mouse combo to go with the iMac! It would have been fantastic!!! No wires! Would look too cool!

I do not give a fvck what some of you Apple druids out there say about going out and buying a a two button mouse. If I pay 3 grand plus ($60 of which is the mouse) for a computer I need a damn mouse that is designed to use the programs the CPU is being touted for. This includes games, Photoshop, Shake, MS office, and the internet. All of these programs work better with more than 1 button...if you say they do not then you are just being stubborn and clouded by your Apple love. If they wanna knock $60 bucks off the price of a PowerMac so I can get a mouse that actually works with the crap I use then I will not complain at all, but some of you idiots want me to be happy about wasting my money on extra hardware that I should not have to buy. I have better things to spend money on than extra mice.

Funny, I never knew I couldn't use Photoshop, Office, the Internet with a one button mouse! Eek, I've been doing nothing for the last 5 years!

Actually, most people hated it because most people use mice incorrectly: They glom their hands onto those huge, so-called "ergonomic" mice, with their wrists down, and so they don't know what to do when faced with a mouse designed for fingertip use.

The puck actually followed exhaustive research by Digital Equipment engineers (the same research that yielded the modern keyboard layout) into ergonomics. They ended up with a round mouse too. It makes sense: You're suppose to keep your wrists up, or straight. So: Hold your arm out. Relax your wrist. Relax your fingers. Look at the outline your fingertips make. It's a circle, roughly. Now, place your hand over the puck. It's a completely natural position that requires little to no effort to maintain for long periods.

The puck was also sized so that little kids could use it with their small hands (remember those little niches called the home and education markets?).

The current "gelcap" is a more conventional Apple mouse. I still use it - and enjoy it - as a fingertip mouse, although it's not as comfortable because I have to close my hand slightly around its narrower shape, but you can use it incorrectly if you want to. And since the button is the whole surface, kids can still use it easily, and you can use more than one finger to press down, reducing strain.

The puck's main problem was the cord, which would change the mouse's angle at inopportune times.

If you want carpal tunnel, look no farther than multi-button mice with scroll wheels.

Good post Amorph. I still use a puck mouse (correctly, I'm assuming. At least my hands don't hurt.) I place my thumb on the left side and my ring finger/pinky on the right side, and rest my index and middle fingers on the button. Most people I've seen grab it very awkwardly or just kind of slop their hand down on it and then try to click with the middle of their finger or their palm.

If you use the puck mouse right, it can be a joy to use. And try to keep that stiff mofo of a cord from jamming up against crap and causing the mouse to spring away from it when you let go.

2 years ago (or so) when the new pro mouse came out i worked in a design office. my boss saw the mouse on apples website and orders instantly for all of us (working with pucks) new mice.

unfortunately many of us (not me) wantet back the puck mouse after a test drive with the pro mouse.

most of them said they are more accurate and faster with the puck...
