Try holding a mouse an inch or so above the surface. It is an extremely uncomfortable sensation - even if the proposed magnets were strong enough to take the weight of your hand. I huess you'd need something to rest your wrist on, which would reduce the effectiveness of the idea.....
What I like to do is to avoid having to lift my arm at all - that is, have the mouse near my side, at an angle, since twisting your forearm to hold the thing is also uncomfortable.
I was thinking....maybe a chair with a track pad built in, at an angle.
((liquid nitrogen+magnet)=Meissner levitation effect+computer peripheral+fingers))= Holy ****ing Christ, my fingers are falling off! Goddam! What were those geeks on the AI forums thinking!?
Of course, you COULD don insulated welder's gloves every time you want to log on...
I feel so confined with a mouse...ESPECIALLY when editing with FCP. I think it would kick serious ass to have the interface from Minority Report. Just have a massive screen and grab your video clips, arrange and edit them with your hands. Like an artist with a wall-size canvas. I think it would be the ultimate interface, but that's definitley for the large-scale user.

Like a hovercraft, just closer to your ears.
(Just add some insulation + there is very little air moving)

Don't forget the entertainment value as I'm sure it'd be slipperier than ice in a 33 degree room.
