Apple customers in the US can now connect with an Apple Specialist over a video call to receive help shopping for iPhone models.

The company announced the new shopping experience on Tuesday, called Shop with a Specialist over Video. Initially, it's only available to shop for iPhones, although Apple may expand it to other product categories over time.

"We're constantly innovating to deliver an even more personalized experience for our customers, meeting them where they are to deliver the best of Apple," said Karen Rasmussen, Apple's head of Retail Online. "With Shop with a Specialist over Video, our team members are excited to connect with customers and provide exceptional service as they learn about which iPhone best suits them."

By visiting Apple's online store, people can instantly connect with an Apple Specialist for service and advice on choosing the best iPhone for their needs. Customers can compare features, colors, and sizes and find the best deal through the Apple Trade-In program or their carrier.

Shop with a Specialist over Video is available in the US daily on Apple's iPhone shopping webpage from 7 am to 7 pm PT by clicking the "Ask an iPhone Specialist" URL. An Apple team member will share their screen on camera throughout the session, but they won't be able to see the customer.

Customers can reach a Specialist 24 hours a day by phone or chat if they discover that a session is not accessible or try to access the page after business hours.

The online shopping experience is similar to the retail appoints that Apple launched in 2020. By booking a time slot within the Apple Store app, customers can browse a store with one-on-one help.

The announcement comes as the new yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus become available for pickup and same-day delivery.

Shop with a Specialist over Video”

I’d like to give big kudos to whom ever at Apple came up with this catchy name.

Yeah, it does kind of roll off your tongue like an accidentally ingested bumblebee. But for those of us who prefer the auto obfuscating benefits of a well conceived acronym, it's SWASOV - which would be pronounced something like "swaws - ov," which we hope does not translate to a highly insulting or vulgar phrase in some eastern European language, or the latest prescription medication for treating ear yeast.

That could be really good. One thing that I don’t usually care about is the colour of my phone, etc. I put cases on them. But you have to pick one so I do but am always wondering if the one I pick is out of stock and a couple days/weeks delayed, but I could have gotten a different colour today. Being able to just say, “What colours do you have?” would be great.

This will be an unmitigated failure because Apple will simply not be able to provide enough personnel to meet demand. There  will be delays, offers to return calls, long queues of angry people. Many will take their time and the time of the Apple rep with question after question. It’s human nature. I can almost see Reddit and Twitter filling up with complaints and rants. Sorry.

I'm always surprised by people's reaction to adding video chat to websites, I work for a start-up who sells this technology (Uptok - shameless plug but they are great people) and it seems like until now the U.S. market wasn't ready for this tech. Interesting move by Apple to start in the U.S. and not in locations where 1:1 video commerce is more mainstream and where populations don't have as easy access to a physical apple store.
