Apple dropping 'Hey' from 'Hey Siri,' and allowing users to issue multiple commands

Apple is dropping "Hey" from "Hey Siri," and allowing users to provide multiple commands without needing to summon the assistant repeatedly.




During the WWDC event on Monday, Apple announced that it will now use the shortened phrase "Siri" instead of the previous hands-free voice command "Hey Siri" in iOS 17.

The company also noted that it would add support for multiple commands. After a user activates the voice assistant, they can issue additional commands in succession without summoning Siri again.

The "Siri" command can be used on any iPhone and iPad capable of running iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.

However, the feature is only available on Macs with Apple Silicon and the second-generation AirPods Pro.

Software updates will be available to developers as betas on June 5, as public betas in July, and released to the public in the fall.

    I guess this is Apple's way of keeping you from talking trash about Siri LOL.  Even with "Hey Siri" there have been so many times when Siri activated when I didn't even give that command.  And forget it when someone on TV actually says "Hey Siri" - I've lost count how many times that activated the HomePod's Siri :-(

    But the nice thing about 'hope' is that it springs eternal :-)  Siri will surely get better...tomorrow.

    That will save me some time, although I wish there was a way to get Siri to stop repeating my question. If I say (and I say things like this often) "Hey Siri, how much is 24 times 360", I really don't need to have Siri repeat the question. Just give me the answer.

    Not repeating means you'd have intrinsic trust 100% of the time that the question was heard correctly. I certainly do not.

    I wasn't saying that Siri should never repeat the question, I was just saying I wanted to be able to disable that. You can leave it enabled.

    Oh boy. For those of us that live in Surrey (which Apple products interpret as Siri) this might be a problem. Time and testing will tell ;)

    You don't think that happens with Alexa devices too?

    So, instead of Siri-triggering bei png (somewhat) protected from by the use of the ‘hey’, I would expect that any mention of Siri will trigger it. That’s not going to cause problems…

    You don't think that happens with Alexa devices too?

    Actually, Alexa does a pretty good job of filtering out false activations once it learns your voice and your housemates’ voices. I can’t recall the last time one of my Alexa devices was triggered by the TV. 

    However, I did get pranked by a colleague during a Zoom meeting when the person said “Alexa, turn off the lights” and I was suddenly sitting in a darkened room. 

    Alexa already has a “follow up” mode that allows you to submit additional voice queries without using the trigger phrase again. Thankfully it’s off by default because it can prove to be annoying in certain situations. For example, if you initiate a dialogue with Alexa and shortly thereafter start talking with someone else nearby, you’ll probably get some bizarre utterances from Alexa, more so when the other person’s voice triggers the follow-up query. 

    Hopefully, Apple make the follow-up feature in Siri optional.
