How Apple Vision Pro will try to fight off motion sickness

The Apple Vision Pro will help minimize instances of motion sickness with brute force, a professor of spatial computing believes, with Apple's high-specification headset relying on extreme performance to do it.

Apple's mixed-reality headset is a powerful processing device, designed to give users as lag-free an experience as possible. It's this high level of performance that should help reduce instances of motion sickness or nausea, and a professor specializing in the field agrees with that sentiment.

According to AI and spatial computing professor David Reid of the Liverpool Hope University speaking to BBC Science Focus, the standout element of the headset compared to others on the market is its use of two separate chipsets. With one used for processing graphics, vision algorithms, and running applications, the second focuses just on processing camera feeds, sensor inputs, and audio from microphones.

During the launch, Apple said it enables for a response time of just 12 milliseconds, virtually cutting out lag and providing a more natural view of the world. Professor Reid is positive on Apple's system to defeat motion sickness, but admits it's a brute force way to solve the problem.

"It's better, but it still isn't ideal" as a solution to motion sickness, Reid explains. "The main problem with virtual reality motion sickness is vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC)."

VAC refers to how a user's brain is provided with mismatching cues between distances of a virtual object from the user in the virtual world, and what distance the user's eyes should focus to in order to see it properly. This is a problem for VR headsets, since they have to manage the user's vision over a very short distance to near-eye displays.

"Apple has tried to reduce the motion sickness as much as possible," Reid adds. "By reducing lag and delay, and using high-quality displays, Apple has made a headset that is best in class in terms of motion sickness."

Reid sums up the performance of the Apple Vision Pro as being "more powerful than a MacBook Pro. It's basically a computer strapped to your face." The professor reckons the setup will mean "lots of new applications and new ways to not just play games, but to work, socialize, and even just browse the internet."

"You'll be able to do things as creatives and professionals that you can't do on conventional computers," Reid continues. Its cost will make it usable only by early adopters, but it will eventually get cheaper and more readily available, and eventually "Apple will be leading the way for virtual reality."

On the 12 cameras and five sensors included in the Apple Vision Pro, the professor adds that this too is a "complicated tracking system" that "requires a huge amount of processing power, but Apple has managed to implement that."

"That would be impressive enough, but Apple then added in a whole host of other high-end features on top."

Professor Reid's comments occur just weeks after Apple's introduction of the Apple Vision Pro, and months ahead of its eventual release in the United States. While the initial device will be costly at $3,499, it's likely that future devices in the product line will be more consumer-oriented in cost, more modest in its capabilities, and with any early-release foibles and issues refined.

    Yeah, I wonder how much of the market will end up having motion sickness with it. It definitely looks better than current headsets, but there will be a subset of the market that will have motion sickness from it. I can get motion sick from playing racing games or FPS games on a regular monitor, and therefore I never play FPS games.

    I'm likely one of the worst case individuals for a headset: need bifocal glasses, easily sweat from the head, and can get motion sick fairly easily. I'm still worried with 12 ms lag times. Would like to see that number drop to 8 ms. The displays need to get to 6k x 5k resolution or so, basically double the pixels of where the VP is, and who knows how my eyes will handle the optics/lens. Wonder how much view warping/distortion they are able to take out? On top of all this the weight needs to drop by half. 

    So, lots of work to do to get to an optimized goggle set. Fortunately, they can ride the TSMC 3nm process with 2 generations of chip improvements to solve some of these problems. The cameras and sensors also can ride steady tech improvements too. The materials will be tough. The glass has to be switched to a scratched resistant plastic or at least a hyper-thin glass. My "scratch resistant" plastic lens glasses always get scratched up, so they likely will stick with glass until they can put an actually scratch resistant glass coating on plastic, or perhaps be able to replace a plastic front every 2 or 3 years.

    The VP also has one or two fans in it too. Two (or four?) linear actuators to move the displays, and lens (?), to fit your eyes. Perhaps the motors can be eliminated by being able to custom build a goggles sit for every individual. The fans and heat sinks/spreaders? Maybe TSMC 2nm could get rid of them. The light seal is a whole science into itself, and needs to get lighter too.

    Apple Vision Pro is  not gonna get much cheaper than what it is, the M2 13 inch MacBook Pro 13 inch is $1900 and the M2 iPad Pro 12.9 is about 2200, the AVP has 12 additional cameras, and an R1 co-processor.…..

    If the display cost goes down to say $300 for both displays and maybe they find a way to use fewer cameras or cheaper cameras and they reduce margin closer to Mac/iPhone at 40%, 1000$ cost plus 40% margin is ~$1600. This could happen for the second version in 2025.

    If Apple wants this to go mainstream, they have to eventually hit a mainstream price point and that is somewhere close to $1000. This is the only product category they have that doesn't hit a mainstream price point. Mac, iPad, iPhone, displays, Watch, HomePod, Apple TV, AirPods, all have accessible entry price points.

    You can't just ignore R&D, and especially ongoing costs such as marketing and support (customer support, software maintenance over the life of the device, etc) when pricing a device.  Even assuming all those estimates are spot-on, the overall profit margin is nowhere near 60%.

    Marvin knows the difference between gross margin and profit margins. He was definitely talking about gross margins. Or just the margin between sales price and the BOM price. However you want to play it. Definitely wasn't talking about profit margins.

    How Apple approaches the vergence accomodation conflict with the GUI is interesting too. The VisionOS UI is or is going to be designed to address or minimize this by just limiting readable UI to a small range in front of you. It's curious that when you place an app window further away from you, the window grows in size and vice versa. Wonder if that is a technique to address VAC.

    Some people will get tired eyes and headaches from using it because your eyes may have conflicting UI on where to focus, no matter what Apple does.
