Apple Glasgow union reaches agreement with Apple for pay raises

Apple's first unionized store in the UK has reached a pay agreement with the tech giant, winning minimum increases and compensation for all staff members.

In November, staff at Apple Glasgow voted overwhelmingly in favor of having UK trade union GMB represent them.

Now, after lengthy negotiations with Apple, the store has reached a new pay agreement.

"Today Apple Glasgow reached an agreement on pay after negotiations. Members voted to reject Apple's pay model and have instead won minimum increases and compensation for all members of staff, as well as improved pay for the majority of staff with most receiving 7%," the Apple Retail Workers Union posted to X.

"Our successful pay negotiations are just one example of the ways in which a union can benefit Apple employees," the union continues. "We have been able to successfully change Apple's pay model to make it more equitable and less dependent on arbitrary metrics."

Apple Glasgow store was the first in the UK to unionize, and officially entered a formal agreement with Apple to have that status recognized in February.

Apple has opposed the formation of unions in its retail stores, to the extent that America's National Labor Relations Board has found it guilty of illegal anti-union tactics.

Apple Store employees want to unionize due to ignored pay and working conditions issues. One staff member compared reporting problems to "writing a letter to Santa."

I would like to see AppleInsider read the contract and compare its benefits with the benefits Apple employees get when they aren't unionized. That would be interesting and relevant to Apple news followers.

I would also be interested in knowing about the "arbitrary metrics."  I would interpret the more equitable pay model that ignores "arbitrary metrics" to mean that pay will be less or not based on performance and that would kind of screw over the best people in favor of the slackers.   To my mind, unionization makes the best sense in situations where individual contribution can't be measured as was often the case in the early industrial era.

This Apple Store is a lovely building on what I think is Glasgow's nicest shopping street.

This unionization effort is very much in character for Glasgow.  When I was last there in July, there were posters everywhere promoting socialist revolution.

So those who do no work continue to scrape by and get the sam pay rise anyway.

Pay from what to what?  What pay and working condition “issues” were being “ignored”?  Didn’t Apple continue to pay their store staff during the lockdowns?  How does their previous pay compare to other retailers?

I would never, ever join a union.  I don’t need a group representing me.  If you have limited skills, and no interest in developing or marketing them — join a union.

This is in line with public sector increases. Apple wanted to offer no increased compensation for some staff and the union has been able to prevent that. Join GMB today!

No compensation?! If true, what a foul move on Apple's part.

Did you actually read what you were quoting?  It states “no increased compensation for some staff”.  Increased from what?  Which staff?  Did it have something to do with how long the person was employed?  Did it have something to do with job performance?

Don't be dense. Did you read what's quoted? Working for a company that wants to not increase compensation for workers, any workers is a foul thing to do. Especially with high inflation the last 2-3 years.

Socialist revolution? That’s a bit soft. How about saying it’s a communist takeover?

Not if those employees were already being compensated more than what the union negotiated for their members with the new contract.

The union might had negotiated a wage pay scale based on seniority and job description. But this being the first year of the union, maybe a few employees were already being paid and compensated above the new union rate scale. If these employees also saw a 7% increase in pay and also receive same increase with every new contract, then other members might start to complain about how come they are always being paid more, when they have the same seniority and job description.

Besides, the union don't really like it when some of its members of the same seniority are compensated more than others, just because they might have earned it by being rewarded for working harder than others, before the union. At best, those workers will not lose any of their compensation, so to be in line with the rest of the union members of same seniority (and job description) and their compensation will increase when their compensation eventually fall inline with the rest of the union members of the same seniority, with each new contract. Being paid and compensated more, for being a harder worker, is not the union way.

Nope! You're talking hypotheticals. All members saw an increase, with most receiving 7% thanks to the union. The union stopped Apple from shafting some employees. Because working with no increase in compensation would be a shitty thing to do.

Glasgow is a nice city with plenty going on.  You guys do know you aren’t REQUIRED to work at the Apple Store that was supposedly shafting you?
