Gone are Apple's leather cases, and in their place are a series of more environmentally-friendly FineWoven cases to go with the new iPhone 15 that have a lower carbon footprint.

Just as it did with its Apple Watch bands, Apple has ended its line of leather goods for iPhone and has instead released a series of cases using its new FineWoven textile.

Made from more than 60 percent recycled material, the new FineWoven leather cases come in several colors including a sharp blue option showcased during the event. The case appears to use the FineWoven material on the back with a rigid bumper around the edge and matching metal buttons.

There is one case design per model of iPhone 15, and each is a MagSafe case. They each cost $59, regardless of whether the case is for the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple has chosen to highlight different color cases for each of the iPhone 15 models, but all colors are available. The five color options are called Mulberry, Evergreen, Taupe, Pacific Blue, and Black.

A new iPhone FineWoven Wallet with Magsafe also costs $59, and is available in the same colors.

There is a difference in the color options available for the new AirTag FineWoven Key Ring, however. This drops the Evergreen color, and adds a red Coral one instead, and each is available for $35.

Apple has also added seven variations of Apple Watch FineWoven bands, ranging from $99 to $149. The 41mm and 45mm Magnetic Link ones cost $99, and are available in Evergreen, Taupe, and Pacific Blue, as well as versions for Small/Medium, and Medium/Large sizes.

Rounding out the new FineWoven Watch bands are two sizes of the Modern Buckle, which costs $149 for the Small, Medium, or Large versions. This band is available in Lavender Blue, Mulberry, or Tan.

I may change my mind when I see these in person but right now not a fan of the texture or colors.

    Bring back leather.

    I'm with you on this.

Amazing how they have swapped an organic, biodegradable material, with a synthetic plastic and it now better for the environment. Must be all those cow farts.

Yes, and all the land, water and other resources that raising the cows take.

Probably as big a hit to resources and carbon footprint as a couple of burgers...
BTW...do these cases / bands recycle or compost?

The leather market is secondary to the meat market, so the leather supply is determined by the meat demand.  Hence no net increase in greenhouse gasses, except for possible leather processing issues.

I'm just bummed all the new silicone sport bands look like gym flooring or confetti sprinkles now. I might need to grab a couple spare solid-color Nike bands (the holes work very well to keep my wrists from getting sweaty and itchy vs. the solid sports band - Not a Nike fan lol). One would think maybe we could get a discount from the usage of all thee ugly "recyclable" materials... But I guess we just get stuck with the privilege of virtue-signaling our "Green-ness" to others haha.

I get clear poly ones from a third party. I want to actually see my iPhone finish, but need a protector. Typically <$10.

I doubt it is meaningfully better for the environment, but at least they aren’t killing sweet old clementine.

The truth is the synthetic cases and bands are cheaper to manufacture and deliver consistency. Margins of course will be impressive.

    Yes, cattle are expensive.

Your point on biodegradability is kinda moot because in a landfill very little biodegrades. Even decades old newspapers.

Yet you can't buy an Apple Watch without a band at all. Given the choice of 3rd party options.

Not like Apple transitioning away from leather cases will change any of that. All those hamburgers still generate cow hides that need to be used one way or another.

So if you have any expectation of using less land, water, etc. related to raising cattle then talk to McDonalds. Oh, right they tried plant based meat. It s*cks.

The ONLY reason, I use a case is so the darn phone doesn't slip out of my hands.

Apple leather cases are the thinest and "for me" last the longest (1 year) lasting that survive well enough, until I buy a new phone.

Maybe I'll start PPFing my phone instead /s
