Jony Ive may design AI hardware that will compete with Apple

Former Apple design lead Jony Ive and OpenAI chief Sam Altman are reportedly talking about a team-up to design a new piece of hardware with artificial intelligence at its core.




The details of the project are fuzzy at the moment, and it's not clear if a partnership will ever come to pass. According to a report late on Tuesday from The Information, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has also been involved in the discussions.

Should the partnership come to pass, it will inevitably be for a piece of hardware that will compete with Apple's iPhone. Apple hasn't been sitting out an era of increased use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in hardware and software, as the technology continues to span its entire portfolio of devices.

Ive left Apple in 2019 to create his own independent design consultancy, LoveFrom, following nearly three decades at the company. While going independent has given Ive the chance to work with other companies, the firm he founded was still connected to Apple for a time.

For example, in May 2021, it was reported that Ive had worked on the 24-inch iMac, a major redesign of the desktop Mac. However, due to the typically long development process for hardware designs, it's plausible that Ive was still employed at Apple at the time of his involvement, rather than it being work carried out as part of LoveFrom.

In 2022, reports circulated that Ive was no longer consulting with Apple.

    Interesting to know what data Jony will use to train his AI. Perhaps millions of pages of blank white paper, every version of white paint in Sherwin Williams’ catalog, wedding dresses, snowstorms, Snowy Owls, cotton balls, , his personal hoodie collection, RGB code 255-255-255, …

    All kidding aside, it will be interesting to see if someone can come up with an alternative to an iPhone that doesn’t look pretty much the same as an iPhone.

    AI will change the computer, mobile, tablets etc. as we know it. No need for an operating system on the hardware or much hardware either, just an interface to the AI that can do almost everything you have to do on your computer manually right now. Tell it to pull up AppleInsider.com, check new forum comments, draft a reply for you to review, create a spreadsheet, send an email, check in customers, send your car to be valeted, design a flyer, order lunch and have it delivered to wherever you are etc. Exciting times ahead! Apple does not yet seem to be part of it while MS seems heavily invested in an AI future.

    It will most likely be a hardware AI assistant, something that Apple hasn't shown much interest in.

    All kidding very much back in the frame, that photo makes him look like a mental asylum inmate being interviewed by a psychiatrist on FaceTime.

    If Masayoshi Son is involved then the project will get at least some funding. Son has already shown a willingness to make crazy bets (e.g. WeWork). And whatever comes out of this partnership is almost certain to be something wildly different - I'm excited to see the result, even if I'm not optimistic about its commercial success.

    And very surprised, angry, and upset with the latest turmoil at OpenAI where they've made a major investment.
