These are not just for nuclear attack.  Could be zombie infestations or other nationwide emergencies.

But for the person who asked what you’re supposed to do if a nuclear missile is headed es your way, hide under your desk?

yes that would probably be a reasonable thing to do.  Preferably in a basement.    It is unlikely that the missile is headed directly for you, and if you are far enough away and with enough barriers between you you’ll probably survive, as long as the house doesn’t fall on you.  Which is why you hide under the desk.

Well that was anticlimactic. At 2:17pm I got a muted “Presidential Alert” on my phone and then at 2:21pm an alert on my TV. Neither was loud.

Only running on Ethernet and NOT WiFi NOR Cell Data, and after putting in the cancel the alarm code, the alarm Test Tone and text still went off on my iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17.0.3.
Mine is on cell, but like you (iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17.0.3) I had entered the cancel code and the system says test alerts not allowed, yet the alert came right through. Not sure why it doesn't seem to honor the disable code.

The alert tone is quite jarring. I wonder how many panic attacks, car accidents and heart attacks occur when the tone sounds?

I've always been alone when they've come, but I couldn't imagine being in a crowded room.
Ima say 0. Happy to see your evidence to support the claim, as is the way.

I've never been "saved" by a warning similar to what this is a test for. People ought to take responsibility for their own situational awareness and pay attention to their senses.
lol the ole “Pull yourself up by the bootstraps!” nonsense. Well unlike you I live in a flood prone region, and welcome the alerts for sudden severe storms and floods

I sure did it when I was a grade-schooler during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Also before and after. It was called "Duck and Cover." We also had a nuclear bomb shelter in the basement of the school. Funny how we're much more likely to see a nuclear attack now than in those days, but everyone has abandoned the idea of trying to survive one. Not sure I'd want to live in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, since I'm so old, but if I was 30 or so, I'd be building a bomb shelter in the backyard, stocking up on MRE's and AR-15's (with CMC full auto Triggers) and assorted pistols and shotguns, every tool I could think of. A dirt e-bike, Generac and gasoline generators (and lots of gasoline), a few tons of water, a satellite phone, Ham Radio transceiver & antenna, flashlights and lots of batteries. A few thousand matches, weather gear. I'd install a library and fill it up. After the radiation levels dropped, I'd hop on my e-bike, and head for the secret bunker where the politicians are hiding, pour all that gasoline down their air chute, light a match, because you know for sure they're the ones who caused it to happen, and Karma can be a bitch!

Warning: If you received the alert, you are now actively being tracked by the ATF.

Kidding. But our dog did nooooooooot like that sound.

iPhone owners who don't want to receive the emergency alert test can dial specific numbers to disable or enable the system for their devices. Dial *5005*25371# to enable test notifications, or dial *5005*25370# to disable test notifications.

FWIW, we had the following experience in a household with two iPhone 14 Pros, both on ATT but on separate plans/accounts.

One one device (mine, on iOS 17.0.2), dialing *5005*25370# triggered an apparent success message: "Test alerts not allowed". I also confirmed at Settings -> Notifications that Test Alerts were toggled off.

On the other device (hers, on iOS 16.x), dialing
*5005*25370# triggered an error message: "Error performing request - Unknown Error".

Despite us doing the above about 36 hours before the scheduled test, both devices received the test message today and sounded the alarm tone.
