Apple needs to give up this one.

It's insane that I can't load whatever software I want on MY iPhone from whatever source I choose.

Hopefully once they're forced to do the right thing in Europe they'll go ahead for the rest of the world too.

You can’t download whatever software you want on your Xbox or car either.
I can on my Mac though...which is a far more logical comparison. An iPhone is a computer is your hand.

I buy Apple gear because on the inter-connected nature of it. iPhone...iPad...Mac...all easily synced and kept up to date on whatever device I am on. All computers. Only one can you choose where and how you download software.

I don’t understand this. People buy iPhones for the security. The App Store is so popular and successful because people know they can trust it. Yes, scam apps do slip though but it’s insanely simple to get a refund. If people want to side load or use alternative app stores but a phone from any one of the dozens of companies that make smart phones. If you don’t want to live inside the walled garden then don’t buy an iPhone. Nobody is forced to buy apple products.

Apple may be big, but the EU is bigger.  The perpetual bully will have a taste of its own medicine…again.  And unlike American politics, Apple can’t bribe their way out of it with lobbyists and corporate donations.  The EU simply isn’t the same kind of corporate cesspool that America is.

Uh, the EU is worse for bribery. Probably why they currently have an anti-corruption bill moving forward to deal specifically with the issues of bribery. You know, for a problem that you think doesn’t exist.

The Airbus scandal brought this to light where many European companies don’t consider gifts as bribery, but rather the normal cost of doing business.

While the EU is big, so is the US. How long do you think the US will sit by while the EU specifically targets US tech companies while leaving EU tech companies exempt from the same policies?

I have two words: Malicious Compliance. Apple should comply by issuing an extremely stripped down version of iOS without iMessage or Apple App Store access on an older version of the iPhone with lower specs only for sale in the EU. The new iPhone FU.

You're free to sideload whatever software you want on your phone. You've been free to do that for years now - just don't expect Apple to honor any warranties that you have.
