"Killers of the Flower Moon" was made available for digital purchase or rent on December 5. And, Apple has now announced a streaming date of January 12 on Apple TV+.

Since its premiere, "Killers of the Flower Moon" has also landed on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Oscars shortlists in the Best Makeup and Hair, Best Sound, Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories. The film has been selected as the No. 1 Best Film of 2023 by The New York Times and The New Yorker, in addition to its recognition by over 20 critics groups globally, including being awarded Best Film by the New York Film Critics Circle.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins and Jillian Dion.

Producers are Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Martin Scorsese and Daniel Lupi. Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Adam Somner, Marianne Bower, Lisa Frechette, John Atwood, Shea Kammer and Niels Juul served as executive producers.

The general release of the film in theaters resulted in an opening weekend of $23 million in the United States, and a further $21 million abroad. However, the following weekend, the film's sales dropped by 61%.

It was 34th in the world for 2023:

The Flash (19), Indiana Jones (15), Ant-Man (10) were called flops. It's a pretty high bar to only consider fewer than the top 10 movies to be successful for an entire year.

If a movie makes back its budget and attracts subscribers, it's provided sufficient return on investment. While Killers of the Flower Moon isn't the most interesting movie, the production values and acting are way above the typical standard for streaming content. This caliber of cinematic content is way more compelling for viewers than long drawn-out disposable TV shows. I'd rather they had 10 of these kind of movies than 100 Morning Show level productions.

It's been really interesting to watch how the calculus has evolved on productions like these since the one-two punch of streaming services and COVID-19. While I won't argue that it's the best movie ever made, I hope there continues to be a place in the market for this kind of film-making.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the movie and hearing the last film score by Robbie Robertson. Waiting to see it at home will be very nice so I can pause it when nature calls. Those who saw it in theaters without missing anything must have massive bladders or were wearing astronaut diapers (MAG).

It wasn’t a flop … it made its money back … though it is fair to say that it wasn’t a hit except with critics, at least in the US.

Oh lord… please explain how it made its money back. It’s budget was $200M without even including promotions, which should have been $30M to $50M minimum at least. It made $156M worldwide, half of which only goes to the studios ($78M)

what are we missing here? Don’t be part of the herd.

Thanks. You saved me from posting a similar reality check. BUT... this being an Apple film, the usual standards for measuring "success" don't apply. For Apple, it's not so much about "making its money back" and much more about how a film investment reflects upon and burnishes the Apple brand. And from that perspective, Flower Moon checks all the boxes: legendary director, A-list talent, an "important" story to tell, critical acclaim, lots of Oscar buzz and further support for Apple TV+ being a streaming service for premium content. Overall, I'm sure Tim considers this film money well spent.
