You forgot to mention that in this case iTunes constantly skips which is why you don't want to give it a low priority at all.

I'm using a 500 mhz iMac, summer 2000 dv se, 1 gig of ram; using 10.2.5.
At the moment, I've got 9 apps active, including iTunes (go Tom Waits!) ... I don't know how much of the cpu is being used, but everything is pretty snappy.
