Despite an incredibly poor theatrical reception Apple's "Argylle" catapulted Apple TV+ to the top spot in streaming movies this past week with its debut on the service.

"Argylle", which stars Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and Samuel L. Jackson among others, originally premiered in cinemas back in February. The limited run was intended to qualify for potential award nominations, and did not attract a big movie audience.

According to Reelgood's rankings, "Argylle" has now outperformed Max's "The Zone of Interest," Hulu's "Poor Things," and Peacock's "Oppenheimer" for the week of April 11th. The action-comedy-romance movie debuted on Apple TV+ on April 12th.

"Argylle" centers around Elly Conway (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) -- a reclusive cat-loving author of a series of bestselling espionage novels about glamorous secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill).

She discovers that her stories strangely mirror the actions of an actual spy organization, and must team up with cat-hating real-life spy Aidan (Sam Rockwell) to prevent a global crisis. Alfie the cat is also involved in the misadventures.

Reelgood, which also ranks streaming TV shows, noted that Apple TV+'s "Sugar" was ranked as the fourth most-popular series. The show stars Colin Farrell as detective John Sugar, who finds intrigue while searching for the beloved missing granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer.

Prime Video's "Fallout" was listed as number one in the charts, followed by Netflix's "Ripley" and Hulu's "Shogun."

Michael Douglas' "Franklin" series for Apple TV+ also hit the top 10, coming in at number seven. In it, Douglas portrays American icon Benjamin Franklin as he helps save the American Revolution by forging an alliance with France, and later negotiating the peace treaty with England.

Just ahead of "Franklin" on the streaming TV charts is the Paramount and Showtime co-production "A Gentleman in Moscow," and Netflix's "3 Body Problem."

I'm a fan of Reelgood but I'm not familiar with those lists. Where do you find them on their website?

It seems likely to me that the viewership of Argylle on Apple TV+ was precisely because of the poor critical reception in Theaters.

"I've seen some bad reviews so I'm not going to pay ridiculous theater prices to go see it, but now that it's playing on the service I've already paid for this month, I'll give it a shot."

And of course, as my daughter said, "but...Henry Cavill."

I will say that the bad reviews but the fun trailer were enticing to me. I didn't want to watch it on AppleTV+ because I didn't want to pay for it in the theater,; rather, I wanted to watch it  because it was panned by critics so harshly. Basically I wanted to see a train wreck.

However, it was not as bad as the critics made it out to me. It was basic action comedy that was by the numbers. Many fun moments to be had and a great cast.

I saw the poor review it received, but I got what I expected, a light movie, with moments of fun and some unexpected plot twists. I spent an enjoyable night whatching it at home
