An effort by some staff at an Apple Store in Short Hills, New Jersey to form a union has failed in a vote among the workers there.

Operations lead John Nagy of the of the Short Pump Town Center Apple Store told Bloomberg that staff there had filed for union representation via the Communication Workers of America on April 8.

The CWA later alleged that management at the store was engaging in illegal anti-union campaigning. It subsequently filed complaints to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Following the defeat of the unionization effort in a vote by staff on May 11th, the CWA blamed the defeat on Apple's anti-union tactics. Only two Apple Stores have thus far successfully unionized.

The NLRB has previously ruled that Apple has engaged in anti-union efforts.

This will be the third Apple Store that has been unable to successfully unionize, following failed votes in Atlanta and St. Louis. Apple Penn Square in Oklahoma City successfully voted to unionize, but has yet to reach a collective bargaining agreement with Apple.

Meanwhile, the Apple Store at Towson Town Center in Maryland, which had already unionized, voted in favor of authorizing a strike. The union there complained of unpredictable scheduling practices, wages that have fallen behind the cost of living, and other work-life balance issues.

The Apple Store at Towson Town Center in Maryland has very low review ratings. Seems that employees there are not happy with Apple or with customers. Interesting that other stores have not unionized so very different cultures exist between stores and between states, despite working conditions being the same.
