One waits for Nisus to roll in the rest of their traditional feature set.

Part of the delay, according to Nisus, is that Apple had (and still has) a bunch of work to do on their text engine. Nisus Writer has taken as long as it has to appear because the functionality just wasn't there yet, or it was there and it wasn't robust enough.

The "Express" version is a way to get something out there and earning money until the full Writer can be finished and deployed. That should be yummy.

If it's as bloated, buggy, and expensive as Nisus Writer for Classic Mac was, forget it.

I'm surprised Nisus isn't dead yet. I guess there are enough hardcore Microsoft haters to keep them propped up?

I guess some people just prefer to get a quarter of the bloat, and a tenth of the bugs for a fifth of the price. Sure Nisus Writer Classic had problems, but ignoring Microsoft's market domination (both as a plus in terms of compatibility and a minus in terms of people hating M$), it was a pretty good deal compared to Word.

There have been enough people who need or want elegant international text handling, and other things that Nisus did well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft kept Nisus up, just so they could have a steady stream of features to crib.

I just want a solution that allows for Arabic/Hebrew etc input.

this is nuts that so long has passed by and nothing has been done.

Is Apple selling ANY Macs in the Middle east anymore?

Have you tried Mellel? I don't know Arabic or Hebrew but it seems to work and it isn't vaperware. Apple must have sold at least a couple to these guys so they could do some development. Probably they should give them a few more, or hire them to fix the right to left issues in Cocoa.

Tried it out, but it's too light in the ass for my use. Also, I need integration with Endnote, so that pretty much limits me to, ahhhh, word. Yeah, Word is garbage, but when I finally get it to work, the formatting is better than anything else I've tried. That is, until I try to display it on another computer....I fscking HATE the way that Word documents display differently on different macs running a supposedly compatible version of Word. WTF is so difficult about nailing compatibility between documents from the same damn application?

IOW, there are no good word processors for OS X. I'm hoping Apple does something about this, and soon. Yeah, and forget about open office, I need something that runs in OS X in non-geek mode, and again, it's got to play nice with Endnote.

This has been my number one complaint all along... with virtually any replacement word processor for Word.

*sigh* But what I really miss is the old WordPerfect 3.5 I used to use in pre-OSX days. I wish they would bring it back. *sigh*

It's nice at times to find some people out there as cynical as me!

I can't disagree that Word is now the only full featured word processor for OS X (maybe I should check out Abiword).

Have you looked at BookEnds? I have been testing it out on a paper I just started writing. So far it looks like I may be switching. Endnote is becoming more and more of a Word only product and I really hate Word.

RE: Lack of MS Word alternatives for OSX, has anyone tried MarinerWrite? It looks a little intriguing, but I wouldn't want to buy it without finding out more about it.

I hope Apple address's the issue that the only powerful word processing and spreadsheet apps for their platform is produced by MS. As Jobs said, MS's problem is they have no taste. I would love for Apple to develop something more powerful than AppleWorks. Rumors of iWorks (terrible name) abound, perhaps they'll come to fruition soon.

MarinerWrite cannot write to word yet. It is also more expensive than the price Nisus is asking for express. It is not beta however.
