Bungie has finally brought all of the "Marathon" trilogy of games to Steam, with "Marathon Infinity" now playable for free on modern Macs.

In May, Bungie started to bring Marathon to Steam, with the intention of bringing all three titles to the digital storefront as free releases. On Thursday, Bungie concluded the trilogy.

Classic Marathon Infinity is a free game on the Steam storefront, playable on both Mac and Windows PC. It is a faithful re-release of the 1995 first-person shooter, using the original data files, but modernized.

These modernizations include widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering, positional audio, and 60+ fps interpolation, all under the Aleph One game engine.

Marathon Infinity has players seized by the rogue AI Durandal and forced to seek the remains of a lost clan and its secrets within ancient ruins on the edge of the galaxy. The game forces players into battling opponents with "sophisticated weapons and devious strategies."

The game's minimum system requirements include macOS High Sierra running on a Mac with either Apple Silicon or an Intel Core M chip, 4GB of memory, and 100MB of storage.

The Steam release follows after two earlier games in the series, also provided for free on the platform. Classic Marathon was republished in May, while Classic Marathon 2 landed in July.

The classic rereleases will potentially keep fans happy while Bungie works on a spiritual reboot. Marathon, announced in May 2023, is a modern retelling of the game within the same universe, but will be playable on the PlayStation 5.

A release date for the new Marathon has not been announced.

    Awesome.
we used to play the original marathon on Work’s network during lunch time. This was back when Doom was the thing on PC. But Bungie’s Marathon was an order of magnitude superior.

Fabulous. My second hooked-on game and I was so into it in the mid-to-late-90s, pushing the then PowerMac 604 chips to the max.

Then the Network game editor came out where you could create your own Maps. I remember having the entire office Ether-networked with it on all the PowerMacs, then all my colleagues and I played it every lunchtime, with a map based on the geography of the facility we worked in. Fantastic memories.

HALO then came along in the early Noughties and I never looked back.

Hopefully, a fully realized version of Oni will also follow. I was so peeved, after waiting years for Oni, just to have it swept under the rug when Microsoft brought all the limelight to Halo

Absolutely agree! This game was lightning years ahead of its time! I think I did beat but would love to another play through of this game, especially if it's been scaled to HD! I'd happily even pay for it! I do remember there was some glitch that caused the game to crash frequently but maybe I didn't have the best machine at the time? A Centris 660AV! Those were the good ol' days *sigh*

I thought Steam support for Macs died when Catalina went 64-bit only.   Or was it just the games that died?

I used to play Half life 2 and Portal and variations from those games.

Just the games. Many games, that's for sure. But there's still a lot left.

FYI the manual download supports third party tile replacement for high-res sprite and backgrounds, etc. In my testing, it takes a hit on game load, and I don't know you can still do it with the Steam version but I assume you can, just gotta find the right folder. https://github.com/Aleph-One-Marathon/alephone/wiki/Hi-Res-Replacements
