Apple calling everything that it released 'intelligent' won't help it catch up

Pretty poor naming.  Microsoft is doing much the same thing in deploying AI anywhere and everywhere that there's an opening, but Copilot is much better branding than Apple Intelligence.

Apple is not a software company? Ok…… I would say Apple certainly better than Microsoft or Google when it comes to OS program software/hardware integration over multiple ecosystems and they have done a better job running their software across multiple processors when necessary over the years and they certainly know what should be in the Kernel and what should be out of the Kernel when compared to Microsoft and more importantly they have the will to fix it and not blame the EU for their shortcomings.

Again, Apple is not selling AI as a product, and folks have got to just stop with this. Apple Intelligence is not Apple-branded ChatGPT.

Apple Intelligence is low level (I think that’s the term) functionality that is being deployed across devices (over time) intended to enhance the user experience of those devices. It is intended to enhance what Siri is supposed to be doing. It is intended, eventually, to enhance the algorithms for services Apple customers buy.

So really there is no “catching up” because no other AI service is running “headless” like this. Every other AI is a product to be sold in and of itself.

For instance, Midjourney steals art to generate art for people who type in a few prompts. Apple Intelligence will, say, randomize a brush stroke effect to help your existing photo composition look more like a painting, or help you frame a pleasing photo composition. Instead of AI creating music compositions, Apple intelligence may introduce realistic defects into your Garage Band or Logic Pro compositions giving them a feeling that actual musicians played the notes, or that the recording came from vinyl, or make recommendations based on common music theories.

I see Apple Intelligence enhancing, if not replacing, Genius in Apple Music.

When we think of Apple Intelligence, it should always be with a “yes and” mindset with the “and” being a product or service Apple offers. Apple Intelligence doing preliminary diagnostics in Disk First Aid to assist in tech triage, or parse console logs to help narrow down an issue. Apple Intelligence turning Siri into your own personal “JARVIS” instead of it being a passive entity. Apple Intelligence refining your Home automation. Apple Intelligence connecting disparate data points from your various health apps to provide holistic feedback on the state of your fitness. Apple Intelligence enhancing health trends, or automatically micro-adjusting goals based on your current fitness levels. We’ve actually seen these pitches in the last two keynote presentations. It’s always been how Apple intelligence is going to make an Apple hardware product more functional.

Apple is NOT a software company. They sell hardware. Their software and services are intended to make their hardware offerings look more appealing. Apple Intelligence is Apple’s “next step” in Apple setting their hardware apart. Apple’s goal with Apple intelligence is to put the “smart” in the smart device.

There is no other AI product I am aware of that has the goal of enhancing someone’s device. every other AI product is selling AI itself as the product to do creative things for people, instead of providing additional tools for creators.
Even Apple intelligence seems like a way to sell hardware by parking M2 hardware in data centres to process Apple is offering a full hardware stack supported by unified software.

im guessing the next mini design is about letting them recycle the devices into future AI clouds and offer better recycling trade in prices. To sell more hardware to end users.

The Pixel 9 (no Lidar) with a five year old Tensor processor and a bad modem phoning home for instructions, or Microsoft recalling your desktop screen isn’t enough.
What does Lidar do for Apple Intelligence or any other company's AI? Do Macs and iPads have Lidar too and that's why Apple AI can work on them? You mention it so regularly, it must be very important to have. Serious question.

    oh, and one more....
What is AI doing on-device with your iPhone that can't be done on-device with a Pixel?  Anything?
Google is behind that’s what up. Their pathetic Tensor processor is five years behind Apple, maybe they can get Intel to help them out? They’re pathetic processor which has no choice, but to phone home for additional functionality is just barely ahead of an 11 Pro iPhone, yet it’s Apple that’s behind.
So Lidar isn't essential, and there's not anything Apple Intelligence lets an iPhone with the very newest processor do on-device that a Pixel with a" five-years behind" processor cannot also do on-device? Fair enough. At least you looked and came up empty.

But duh, Apple is well-ahead on pure processor speeds. Now we agree. :)

"Catch up" to what? Chat clients aren't Apple's business (and likely aren't a business for anyone). Apple has incorporated subsets of the "AI" superset in iOS for many years. They aren't late to any particular party in the market they're actually in, CE and computing devices.
In my opinion, Siri is an Apple chat client. The issue is that Apple didn't know what to do with it beyond executing commands like making calls, playing music, etc. Now, competitors have surged ahead, and Apple is attempting a comeback. I concur that Apple isn't late to the game, given their acquisition of Siri in 2010. However, they are certainly lagging behind in the AI market, especially in generative AI.

Sorry, strong disagree on many of your points. Apple is refreshing in the way it's approaching AI. They are doing their time-tested playbook of waiting for others to enter the market first and learning from their competitors mistake. Then Apple sets a vision of how a new technology might be used in some very accessible ways to everyone. Then they hook it into their Apple ecosystem like only they can, since no other tech company has close to the ecosystem that Apple does.

For example: my 72 year old mother will never use chatGPT in her life, but she'll definitely use apple intelligence when it comes to her phone. She might use it to proofread a text she's going to send or create a fun litle emoji. Apple has a better vision for AI than anyone else and just you watch: every other competitor will begin emulating Apple's use of AI.
They had to wait for others because they didn't have the vision on how to improve Siri, not because it's in their playbook. Now, they're integrating generative AI features into iOS and macOS, following in the footsteps of competitors. Microsoft and Google had already implemented most, if not all, of the features Apple has announced.

Copilot has been Recalled for repairs, like the Windows Surface and the Windows kernel something about a CloudStrike.
From what I have seen of Copilot, it works exceptionally well, especially when integrated with MS Office, Dynamics and VS Code.

The majority of reviews for the newest Surface devices equipped with Qualcomm processors are highly favorable.

And it appears that Microsoft is taking action following the CrowdStrike issues.

Apple might offer a superior experience in certain aspects, but Microsoft and Google each have their own set of advantages over Apple. One example is with enterprise software.  Apple has nothing that compares to what MS have. Other is gaming.  The integration of Windows and Xbox is excellent, far better than what we have with Apple.

I suppose you will be happy to know that MS is working to fix the Crowdstrike and Recall issues.

Apple saying AI so frequently isn’t for the benefit of customers. The vast majority of customers don’t care or don’t even know about all of the upcoming AI features. Repeating the word AI over and over is so the Wall Street bros don’t tank their stock again for no good reason like they were doing before WWDC.
