Touch screen issues hit iPhone 16 Pro and older models

In what appears to be an iOS 18 bug, users of iPhones including the iPhone 16 Pro are reporting touches and taps not being recognized.

Some iPhone 16 Pro users are reporting touch screen issues and others say it's affecting the Camera Control button

It's not clear how widespread the issue is, but broadly some users are finding that their touchscreens are ignoring taps, swipes, and other gestures. The problem is not consistent, either, but typically the issue appears to resolve itself within a few moments -- until it later reoccurs.

Most reports concern the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, but they are not exclusive to the new models. Instead, anecdotal evidence appears to suggest that the problem lies with iOS 18.

As first spotted in detail by 9to5mac, it looks to be that iOS 18's touch rejection is too sensitive. This is the system that means an iPhone can deduce whether a tap is just an accident of how the user has picked up the device, or it's a deliberate choice that requires a response.

There's no indication of how many users are affected, and reports on online support forums say it is happening on certain iPads, as well as iPhone models as old as the iPhone 14. Mastodon user Khaos Tian, however, has demonstrated one way how the issue can be intentionally triggered.

Some users are reporting issues specifically around the new Camera Control button. However, it's not clear whether this is the same issue and touch or palm rejection is briefly blocking that button too.

Since it appears to be affecting iPads and older iPhones, it does seem most likely to be a software issue rather than any physical fault with the iPhone 16 Pro range.

A similar issue affected the iPhone 12 mini back in 2020, although that turned out to be related to cases and screen protectors blocking touch sensitivity.

Apple has not yet commented on the reports.

I was having these problems then last night I saw an iOS 18 update for all iPhone 16 models. I installed it and everything seems much better.

I had this too.  For me it was a very easy fix. I realised that I was touching it wrong as it was my MacBook Pro

    Doh!!!!!

This has occurred on iOS 17 on my 15 Pro Max for the past few months prior to iOS 18 public release

Since upgrading my iPad Pro 11" and iPhone 13 Pro to iOS 18, I've noticed unrecognized taps.
    It seemed like apps freezing.
If I switch to another app, then back it would go away. In browsers, reloading pages seemed to unfreeze them.
    Not great.

    Hopefully Apple fixes this soon.

I usually wait for the first bug-fix update before upgrading. Bad on me.

I've experienced this on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, but I thought it might be related to the super-dumper TORRAS screen protector I'd installed - I've been resorting to doing swipes over the cards in my solitaire game.  :)

I've finally experienced a totally dust-free bubble-free pristine screen protector installation, and I sure hope this is simply a software bug.

I have encountered it, but it didn’t rise to a level of consciousness, where I ascribed it to a bug. Good to know, though. Hopefully, the seriousness and how wide-spread this is will lead Apple to release a quick update before the release of iOS 18.1.

I wonder if it is related to the thinner bezels. Since I got the latest iPad Pro, I’ve had a lot of trouble with typing and other touchscreen issues, but I eventually figured out that I just need to be extremely careful about not touching any part of the screen at the sides while I’m holding it. I never had these problems previously, but the touch rejection isn’t smart enough to compensate for my increased risk of accidentally touching the very edge of the screen with a part of my hand, now that the bezels are so thin. It’s been extremely frustrating—for a while I couldn’t type more than a sentence or two max in the mail app without it exiting the page and saving a new draft, but now that I understand the problem I’m a lot more careful and it’s manageable. I wish there were a setting to desensitize a 1.5mm border all the way around the screen.

My iPhone 15 Pro Max is doing it regularly now, screen taps around the edges. Also freezes during text entry.

This seems likely. If part of your fingers or palm are wrapping around the edge of the phone and touching the screen then that seems to register as a touch and negates future touches.

Rip off that screen protector! You don't need it.

Not sure if related.  A friend updated their 14 pro 2 days ago and is complaining about how slow it is.   I have a base 15 and after update things have been great

I have a 13 mini. I read and scroll through Apple News a lot. They have definitely done something to the sensitivity of the screen when swiping right to go from an article back to the main list of articles. What used to be the most effortless swipe is now frustratingly unresponsive.

I wonder if it is a hardware thing for 16s or a change in software.

Yup. I'm having the issue. Grrr.

I'm a little miffed at Apple right now.
    1) Seems like abnormally low trade in values?
    2) Shipping the phone with so many "not-ready" features.
    3) The camera button (sorry Apple, it's a Button) seems very quirky, touch, half-press, finger slide . . .  I'm currently playing and learning with it. But it seems "longer" to access features than normally just using the touchscreen??  I'm not sure it's a real usable tool.
    4) This screen bug that ignores taps and swipes that is mentioned in the article . . . it's hard to reproduce but it's happened to me maybe 10 times in 3 days!

So far, I'm not super pleased with my $1300 purchase (16 Pro with 512gb memory)

Especially for older or critical devices I’ve learned long ago to hit pause on any major generation update to sort out all the slight issues of things like this or the far more common gap between major OS upgrade and all my applications being compatible. Software vendors can often lag significantly in getting fully compliant and so I’ve learned to wait.

Once I’ve my new device or course that’s moot and I just have to wait out the software people, but I prefer before then to not fix something that’s not broken.

I can’t stand screen protectors.  But, it does bring up the question - such as how many scenarios and iPhone hardware versions does Apple do QA testing with?  This seems like something that should have been caught assuming there is good QA testing.

My friend’s 14 pro has a screen protector and was recently updated to iOS 18.  She has been complaining about how slow the phone is trying to use apps. I wonder if possibly the screen protector is causing issues….

I started having this problem playing Clash Royale on my iPhone 15 Pro Max ever since the first iOS 18 beta.

I started noticing that I wasn't able to drop some cards on the playfield despite using the same tapping gestures I had always used. I lost so many frustrating games having to tap over and over.

I'm convinced this is the same issue described in this article.

It’s not just the iPhone 16s, I’ve been experiencing these touch screen sensitivity issues on my iPhone SE (2022) - the screen won’t respond to touches (particularly in Messages and particularly if a text selection menu is open) and the only way to get around it seems to be closing and reopening the app or locking and unlocking the iPhone.
