YouTube gets Apple Vision Pro app Juno kicked from App Store

Despite a lack of first-party YouTube clients on Apple Vision Pro, YouTube has prompted Apple to remove Juno from the App Store, citing vague guideline violations.

YouTube doesn't offer a client for Apple Vision Pro

Juno was a third-party YouTube client built for Apple Vision Pro by Cristian Selig of Apollo fame. The app was a basic web view for YouTube that didn't go out of its way to alter content beyond aesthetics to make the app appear visionOS native.

Despite that, YouTube has pushed Apple to remove Juno from the App Store with no clarification or discussion. Selig shared the removal via a blog post.

It isn't clear exactly why YouTube would go after a client that acted almost like a web browser showing YouTube videos. There were no ad blockers or any suggestions in the app that it was official or affiliated with YouTube.

With Juno not being compliant, then there's a question about other YouTube clients built for Apple Vision Pro. Television by Sandwich uses a similar visionOS native browser to find videos on YouTube, then plays them in 3D representations of old TVs.

Third-party clients and browsers are allowed to exist and access YouTube, unless the company is taking a specific stance on browsers built for Apple Vision Pro. Even more odd is that YouTube is among the few apps that don't offer any kind of app for Apple's headset, not even the ported iPad version.

Either YouTube is gearing up to launch its own Apple Vision Pro client, or it saw Juno as some kind of problem for its platform. Either way, Juno is no longer downloadable from the App Store.

Users that still have the app downloaded can use it until it breaks or YouTube specifically blocks it. YouTube can still be accessed from Safari and select third-party apps on Apple Vision Pro.

YouTube - has gotten ridiculous since Google bought them. The commercials make watching videos horrible. Have them up front, not every 10 seconds. And now this? It's laughable they don't have an app on the VP and go after someone that allowed a better experience than watching in a browser. I continue to look for other platforms and only go to You Tube when I have to.

Wait what? I think it's pretty clear. An app using YT content that doesn't pay tribute to YT. I can't want Andrews videos embedded at AI unless I sign in because I might be a bot?! WTF. This is Google being Google. Greedy bastards who binned their catch phrase 'Don't Be Evil' long ago. But hey baby needs shoes and execs gotta eat.

Captive commercials and that constantly annoying popup for Google TV. No thank you Pain–Google.

This is wrong, for YouTube yes, but especially for apple. Shame on apple.

These guys did nothing wrong, but they got punished just because apples buddy didn’t like it.

    So horrible.

Who’d want to take a chance developing with that stuff going on?

even if YouTube decides to make an app, competitors are allowed to exist. All it was was a presentation wrapper. Sheesh.

As if the VP needed LESS apps… LOL

Without a decent Ad Filter Youtube nowadays is unwatchable.

I don't use an ad filter on YouTube and have yet to see an ad.

For the low cost of two Pumpkin Spice lattes's, you never have to see one either.  How easy can it be to avoid ads, and gosh it saves way more than the price of aggravation compared to the cost of a subscription.  I've always considered it weird that folks can afford a so-so or worse lunch a few times a month, but paying less than the cost of a single one for a media service is something beyond their budget.

Google wants to make a big splash on the Vision Pro themselves, they also think they can use this as leverage against Apple kill two birds with one stone in short, they think they’re special.

Regular TV interrupts shows to show ads, so YouTube does as well. I’m most definitely NOT defending this practice, but if you DON’T skip the ads at the beginning, you’ll get fewer-to-no ads interrupting the video, don’t skip those either. If you’re a frequent skipper, you get more ads and longer ads, and eventually UNSKIPPABLE ads.

Just mute the video, do something else for the length of the ad, and after a while of this you’ll be able to watch YouTube videos almost entirely uninterrupted.

The problem is all the "streaming" services one may have to subscribe to. It all adds up. I don't mind seeing an ad before a video starts - then leave it alone. That model worked for them and streamers were making plenty. Then Google got involved and it became unwatchable. And - for the record, I don't remember the last time I bought a Latte.

So enjoy your subscription. I refuse to cave.

Regular TV ads can be skipped when recorded. But when watching live, it's livable. The practice used by Google with YouTube is horrible. Don't offer a skip button if you are going to punish me for using it.

Pretty sure I've watched the ad at the beginning in totality then hit with ads every few seconds for a video when I'm trying to follow a process to troubleshoot an issue or see how to do something that's only on YouTube. I'll look out for what you are saying next time as following ads I'll skip.

While your premise is wrong, "streamers were making plenty" without ads, you have a common opinion about paying for content.

For me, avoiding aggravation with a service I depend on for learning and research, and otherwise enjoy daily, is worth the paltry $14. Bonus! It includes YouTube Music at no additional charge.

I don't like ads and can afford to avoid them when given the chance. I don't feel I need to steal the content and I don't have to be irritated. Some folks may have much tighter budgets which I can 100% understand. Been there and done that, more than once.
