Hands on with Image Playground, ChatGPT, and Genmoji in iOS 18.2

The first developer beta of iOS 18.2 includes several new Apple Intelligence features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and ChatGPT integration. Here's how they work.

iOS 18.2 is out for developers

Apple hasn't even released iOS 18.1 yet but we've already gotten a new beta with more Apple Intelligence features. The iOS 18.1 update included Writing Tools, a new Siri UI, Clean Up tool in Photos, and more.

This update brings much more, and what we'd describe as the fun parts of Apple Intelligence. That said, it's still a very early beta so things are likely to change and improve by release.

We tested this on our iPhone 16 Pro, which took only a few minutes to download and install the 7GB update.

Genmoji in iOS 18.2

The first thing we wanted to try out was the new Genmoji creation. Basically, entirely custom emoji based on whatever it is you're thinking.

Hands holding a smartphone, typing a phrase beneath a shopping cart icon on the screen.
Describe any emoji you want and it will create it

Need a pic to represent a cinnamon apple latte -- cool, Genmoji can make that for you. Want a Genmoji of a person beekeeping -- it can do that too.

If you do suggest a Genmoji that contains a person, it will ask you to choose an image source first to base it off of.

You can choose a pic from someone in your Photos app or you can just use a generic emoji person. You can also choose the emoji person's gender, age, and skin tone too.

Shopping cart with pumpkins, beekeeper character, mug with latte art, apple drink with cinnamon, whipped cream drink with heart.
Here are some of the Genmoji we made

We tried all sorts of things and it consistently gave us clear, well-designed Genmoji to play with. Only a few times did they look wonky, which is as expected with any image generation.

Image Playground

Image Playground allows you to generate larger images, besides emoji characters. They are saved at 1024 by 1024 resolution and can be shared like any other photo on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Person holding a smartphone displaying an app with a baby's photo and avatars at the bottom, set against a white background.
To create an image, describe it and select some modifiers to go along with it

When you open the Image Playground app, you can write a description of the image you want to see. A person doing something, a landscape, an object, almost anything.

There are guardrails here so you can't do anything inappropriate or use any protected images. But they can be based off you, your friends, or family.

You can then add some modifiers, like wearing a red baseball hat, on a beach, or doing an activity. We tried to generate ourselves at a party in NYC with fireworks.

Person holding a smartphone showing a colorful interface with profile pictures, suggestion bubbles, and a toolbar at the bottom.
Does this look like Andrew O'Hara? We aren't sure how much it does

This doesn't exactly look like us, but it's a general idea. We tried with some other people in our phone and the results were still... mixed.

Animated character with brown hair and beard smiling, wearing a blue jacket, standing in front of a city skyline with fireworks in the night sky.
The generated images don't always manage to match the original very well

They are all in an animated style, which is fine, but they don't look super close to the original. We tried showing ours to people and no one guessed that it was supposed to be us.

Like we said though, this is an early beta and this can all improve.

Otherwise, Image Playground is fun. People are going to have a blast coming up with images to try out.

It's mostly limited by your imagination. Apple does provide quite a few rotating prompts for accessories, activities, locations, and more which will help.

This works with Image Wand too, built into Notes. You can use it to turn your sketch into a real image or generate an image based on your content.

ChatGPT and Siri

This beta also brought our first taste of ChatGPT integration. When you ask Siri a question that it thinks ChatGPT will better be able to answer, it will ask you for permission before sharing it.

Hands holding a smartphone displaying a ChatGPT app screen with options for integration and usage.
ChatGPT works with Siri when you want it to

ChatGPT will then process the request and give you an answer. It's very smooth, fast, and best of all -- private.

Apple made sure that none of your information is stored, that your query isn't used for training, and that your IP address is obscured. If you log in with ChatGPT, you'll be bound by OpenAI's privacy policy.

A person interacts with a smartphone, displaying a list of costume ideas on the screen, above a digital keyboard.
Here are some toddler costume ideas ChatGPT gave us

We asked Siri for a receipt for sweet potato fries and then some costume ideas for a toddler. Both things ChatGPT gave us solid answers to.

This works both for speaking and by typing. This is easily the best way to use ChatGPT on an iPhone now.

Other improvements with Apple Intelligence

For iPhone 16 users, there is new Visual Intelligence. This is enabled by long holding on the Camera Control.

It opens up the camera and scans the world around you. We scanned a can of pop for nutrition info, pointed it at a LEGO set to get shopping options in Google, and it identified the breed of a dog.

Two hands interact with a smartphone displaying search results for Lego Ghostbusters sets on a white background.

You can also scan a poster to add it to your calendar, automatically translate or read text, or identify a storefront to get its hours of operation.

This update brings changes to the Mail app. It was slightly redesigned with new filters for promotions, updates, and transactions.

The new Mail app has various filters

That goes with the previous update that added the priority indicator for important messages.

More changes in iOS 18.2

Other changes in this update include:

  • New "Default Apps" section in Settings

  • Ability to set default apps for messages and calls

  • EU users can delete App Store, Camera, Messages, Safari, and Photos

  • New volume limit for built-in speakers

Those generated images look generations behind already. Ai is moving very quick and Apple needs to get up to speed real fast.

there’s always critics, no matter-Apple asked for it when they changed the worlds personal computing, but give it a break, they are not going to change the way they do things just because a bunch of Fanboys wants it and wants it now🧑‍🍼

They are promoting the hell out of this stuff and it looks like what the competition was doing 2 years ago. I think that’s a completely valid criticism.

If I was shown that emoji and asked which AI staffer it looked like, I would have said "Andrew". It's not too bad.
What I noticed with Memojis is that if someone had a distinct hairstyle with specs or something, the Memoji tends to look more like the person than just a generic face.
The Image Playground seems to make a better likeness of people.

That said, I was under the impression that some of this stuff would be in iOS 18.1. Bummer to know that we only get the text AI features and the picture eraser feature first.
Still, I am looking forward to seeing how the eraser works. I've just gotten back from a holiday and have a few shots from which I'd like to erase out a few people.

With the introduction of Apple Intelligence at the WWDC, I already had the impression that everything was conceptual and Apple didn’t have anything concrete. Usually, when Apple announces something new, Craig Federighi gives a demo. None of this with Apple Intelligence: just a presentation with images with how it should work. It appeared somewhat rushed to me.

That now proves to be true.

However, I’m happy with the useful way Apple integrates it.

Now waiting for the privacy focussed EU to be convinced that the Apple way of implementation is the way to handle Ai…

No, Apple has stated they will not generate life like images, it has nothing to do with being “behind”. The cartoonish effect is there for a reason. If you don’t like it, use another image generator.

How was Siri able to give you “a receipt for sweet potato fries“? Maybe Apple Intelligence should be  proofreading.

It's probably one of these features that people think are gimmicky but I actually really like Genmoji. Will be using it for sure if it ever comes to the EU :(

Well if you read any article on here or the Apple event you would know that the chatGPT features don’t keep your information and/or previous requests since your request is privately relayed to Apple servers then anonymously answered by ChatGPT

Why does Genmoji have a waitlist and need approval? I thought that ran on device.

Yeah but whatever you are inquiring about, say fix a thesis of mine, OpenAI gets that "content" it may be anonymous, but the content is "juggled" by OpenAI.

Their site also says images are created on-device:

    https://developer.apple.com/apple-intelligence/

"Image Playground delivers an easy-to-use experience to create fun, playful images in apps like Messages, Notes, Keynote, Pages and more. Using the Image Playground API, you can add the same experience to your app and enable your users to quickly create delightful images using context from within your app. And because images are created entirely on device, you don’t have to develop or host your own models for your users to enjoy creating new images in your app."

There's only so much that can be done with 8GB total RAM and the stored image models. High resolution (1024+) image generators need 16GB or more RAM, ideally 32GB.

I said absolutely nothing about “life like images”. Other LLMs can do convincing cartoon/art styles that don’t have the obvious ai look to them that Apple is showing.

On the first day of release it will become apparent why Apple chose to do image generation the way they did it at least on the first day of release, and the same applies to whatever Google releases and whatever Microsoft (Recall) releases, who among the big three will make the mistake of releasing something that is a free-for-all AI image generation on the first day of release to the general public?

Maybe it’s me, but all this back and forth over Image Playground and the quality of its generated images seems mostly irrelevant. How many consumers will put the ability to make fake AI generated images near the top of their must have features list? Probably not many.

The article should have clearly mentioned the need for and how to request early access, instead of leaving me to search and delay my request by over a day.
