Apple has released new firmware for the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, another software update for its personal audio devices.

Apple has been uncharacteristically frequent with its firmware updates for its AirPods product lines. The relatively high tempo of updates has continued with yet another AirPods firmware update.

Rolled out on Monday, the latest firmware updates are for the AirPods Pro 2 with both Lightning and USB-C charging cases, as well as both of the AirPods 4 models.

It is not known what has changed in the firmware, build 7B20 for the AirPods 4 and 7B21 for the AirPods Pro 2. It is probable that the updates will perform bug fixes and performance improvements on the audio equipment, with full details known if Apple publishes a release note.

Apple's last firmware update was for the AirPods 4, which arrived on October 29. That was an update to version 7B19, the same version as given to the AirPods Pro 2 in an update the previous week, but without the Hearing Health features.

Users are not able to force an AirPods update through, but they will instead update automatically while paired to an iOS device and placed inside their charging case.

This is strange - you mention an update to 7B19 for the Airpods 4 - I wanted to check if mine already updated and I have version firmware version 7B20 which I assume to be newer.

Apple sends out the 7B19 update on October 29. Then it sends out 7B20 November 11. Sometime in-between those two dates your AirPods 4 updated to 19, then 20. That doesn't seem strange.

Checking my AirPods 4 on November 12 they were at 19. I connected them in the case to my MacBook Air via USB and an hour later they were at 20. Not strange. A much older AI article suggested that connecting AirPods to a Mac or MacBook might somehow 'force' an update. Whether is this actually the case or not, I've done that with various AirPods ever since and they've updated very quickly. Coincidence? Maybe. But I'll keep doing it until Joz or someone official says "No, that can't possibly make any difference. And we put the button on the bottom just to ƒ¨ç˚ with you!"
