It has been a year since Apple provided insight on its total install base, but on the earnings call Thursday, CEO Tim Cook shared that it is 2.35 billion devices.

Apple's iPhone 16 lineup likely helped with the install base growth

The first-quarter earnings call revealed a lot of small details about Apple's business. One metric anticipated by investors hasn't been shared since January 2024.

The previous number was 2.2 billion devices, which was 400 million higher than the number shared in 2022. Apple CEO Tim Cook shared that the number has reached a new record high of 2.35 billion active devices.

That is a sharp increase over two years of 550 million devices, though more in line with the 2022 increase and not the incredible 2023 increase. The install base growth has slowed overall.

Apple's iPhone may have shrunk a bit year over year to $69.1 billion, but it is still selling in droves and helping add to Apple's install base. Cook did try to associate iPhone growth with Apple Intelligence during the call, but analysts have stated otherwise.

However, the earnings call did reveal that the iPhone reached a new all-time high install base in every region.

The total revenue for quarter one of 2025 is $124.3 billion. As Apple expands into new categories like Apple Vision Pro, its revenue and install base are sure to grow too.

Ok. Let's let the champagne fizzle for a moment. When  Cook says devices, I presume that he means:
    1. Phones
    2. iPads
    3. Macs
    4. What about wearables: AirPods, AirTags, Watches? Because if you count that in, aside the Watches, AirPods and AirTags are revenue but hardly in the same class as phones, iPads and Macs, i.e. Let's say that Cook means devices that have a face: Phones, iPads, Macs and Watches. AirPods and AirTags don't count.
That is still a bloody impressive number. That's folks in the Apple ecosystem who like me once they desert the Android universe remain with Apple.

btw I did not mention the Vision Pro in the hope that Apple will finally take the focus away from consumer to pro: that would be hospitals, businesses, engineers and such where it has a very strong chance of succeeding. Any function that can benefit from a device that is too expensive for an individual, too bulky and with exceedingly low use-case for the main consumer.

What I would like to see in 2025 is Apple resurrect the Apple Car as the Apple CarDrive Software System, ACDSS, integrating the lame CarPlay toy with car driving functionality. Every EV and PHEV out there has a proprietary software built by the manufacturer. It would be good to see a company like Apple bring some level of professionalism, uniformity and functionality to this segment.

Other than that, Bravo Apple. You make all your users proud.  B)

According to FindMy my immediate family accounts for 42 of those devices, not counting AirTags. (Most of those are not still in services, but don’t tell FindMy that.)

yes, someone should ask Tim C to clarify which devices are included to come up the number. Plus, does anyone know how many devices Apple has sold since day one?

The total of all Apple devices sold in the 20th century are a rounding error compared to the number of active devices today. For example, over its 16 year run, only 6 million Apple II computers were sold.

And I still have my Apple 2e in the original shipping box, along with the dual disc drive, green monitor and original Visicalc leather bound manual, with all operating 5 1/4 floppies.

We must also appreciate that every new device activation adds further demand onto online infrastructure (eg. Siri, notifications, iCloud - mail, documents, file storage - contact syncing, bookmark syncing, etc.), so it's impressive that Apple has kept the online experience super-positive while onboarding millions of new devices.

I never doubted Apple 35 years and I still don't today. I do hope they won't lose sight of the "Unix-compatible" nature of their devices, though. The software architecture is a huge factor in their success.
