Starting from iOS 18.1, you can set ChatGPT as the default search engine in Safari. Here's how to use the LLM service for your browser queries.

ChatGPT can now act as the default search engine in Safari.
Now you can set ChatGPT as the default search engine in Safari.

With Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, Apple provides OpenAI's ChatGPT integration into several features of iOS. OpenAI also has a ChatGPT app (Free) which you can download from the App Store.

Once you have ChatGPT installed in iOS, you can use it as your default search engine within Safari.

Three smartphone screens show Safari's settings, emphasizing enabling the ChatGPT search extension with various toggles for permissions and private browsing settings.
Enabling ChatGPT to be Safari's default search in iOS

While Apple currently doesn't provide a direct way to set OpenAI as your default search engine in iOS specifically, you can effectively enable it as the default for searches in Safari. It does require a few more steps than the typical changing of the default search.

How to set ChatGPT as default Safari search on iOS

  1. Make sure the ChatGPT app is installed on your device.

  2. Open the Settings app and tap on Apps->Safari.

  3. Turn on the toggle switch under Extensions->ChatGPT Search.

  4. There's also a switch for Allow in Private Browsing.

  5. In the Permissions->google.com section, tap Allow.

  6. Exit the Settings app.

Now if you run Safari and type text in its search bar, it will ask ChatGPT to perform the search for you.

This is a great addition to iOS and Safari as it makes searching via ChatGPT seamless and easy. Hopefully we'll be seeing more AI integration options from Apple in the near future.

it seems a bit excessive to fire up an entire LLM for a simple search query. The power consumption is massive and it's slower for the end-user, so ideally there should be an easy to reach choice button for each search query.,

First off I was quite excited to be able to integrate ChatGPT into my Safari browser. But then I remembered that other than Brave - which I have been using for years - I do not use any other browser, especially Chrome or Safari which track queries and then onsell the data to brokers. With Brave~Private mode all ads, tracking etc are blocked. So, I guess, I will have to do without ChatGPT integrated into my Safari browser, which, incidentally, I deleted moons ago.

Don’t do this.  You’ll be using up so much potable water and adding so much heat to the planet.

Apple doesn't on-sell user data. They actively work to avoid anyone being able to do this. Why do you think there was such an uproar about Apple's anti-tracking tools?

Brave is a great browser but it suffers from Chromium's resource hogging. I very rarely use it. BAT payments just aren't worth the hassle of a crappy interface inherited from Google.

Accidentally discovered this plugin last night. It’s slow but I use and just overall degrades the experience. Google search is still decent for finding some random website. For more demanding search use Perplexity of one of the AIs

    Nor does Google.
