Apple's MagSafe charger gets new firmware update

Apple has released a new firmware version for its iconic MagSafe charger, though there are currently no details as to what the update contains.

Nearly every tech accessory has firmware, and the MagSafe Charging puck is no exception. Apple provides updates to accessories like this in the background with no release notes or any way to push the update manually.

Tuesday's firmware update brings the version to 2A146, up from the previous 2A143. The update will install automatically when the MagSafe Charger is in use and connected to power, though the user will not be notified of any change.

Though it's not entirely clear what the update is for, the new firmware likely contains bug-fixes or quality-of-life improvements. The firmware itself is responsible for detecting a connected device and negotiating charging speeds, so periodic updates and adjustments make some sense.

MagSafe chargers have long been a staple of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, and Apple brought the same concept over to the iPhone in 2020.

2024 saw the release of an improved MagSafe charger, which enables 25W wireless fast charging on the iPhone 16 range. The 25W MagSafe charger is compatible with iPhone 12 and later, aside from the budget-friendly iPhone 16e, which doesn't support the feature by default.

How to check the MagSafe Charger's software version



Users of the MagSafe charging puck can check the firmware version via the Settings application on iOS.


  • Attach the iPhone to the MagSafe Charger

  • Open the Settings app

  • Tap "General"

  • Tap "About"

  • Scroll down, under "Carrier Lock" the attached accessory menu will appear as "Apple MagSafe Charger," tap this

  • View the listed firmware version

    According to Apple, the following procedure may trigger a MagSafe firmware update:

    1. Deplete your iPhone battery to <10%.
    2. Make sure you are connected to WiFi (turn off cellular data to insure this).
    3. Place your iPhone on the charger.
    4. Let it charge to >90%.

    It's recommended that you then check your MagSafe firmware version to see if the update occurred.

    My firmware version is listed as 0.0.2.58.

    Hmm, my new 25w mag charger puck is Model A3250 and shows Firmware V. 133.0; hardware v. REVA.
