iPadOS 18.5 has arrived with bug fixes and little else

It's a classic late-cycle update, with iPadOS 18.5 releasing with a new notification for Screen Time and a new modal for making Apple TV purchases on third-party devices.

iPadOS 18.5 is here

Apple should have been refining new Apple Intelligence features with iPadOS 18.5, but since the new contextual AI was delayed, there's not much here. The new update includes bug fixes and a couple of other tiny changes that are also a part of iOS 18.5.

The release notes specifically call out the new Pride Harmony wallpaper, a Screen Time feature, and an Apple TV app update. There is nothing specific for iPadOS in the release.

The new Screen Time feature adds a notification for parents whenever a child's device uses the Screen Time passcode. This will help stop kids that figure out the passcode from using it without their parent's knowledge.

If you've ever purchased anything on an Apple TV 4K via the Apple TV app, then you know your iPhone can prompt you to complete that purchase. Well, that feature has arrived for third-party devices using the Apple TV app.

How to install iPadOS 18.5

Even though the update is fairly minor, it is good to ensure your devices are kept fully up to date. If automatic updates are enabled, it will install overnight within a few days.

If you'd like to update immediately, navigate to Settings, select General, select Software Update, then select the update option for iPadOS 18.5. The update will complete after a reboot if your device is over 50% or connected to power.

I like software defects getting fixed, especially ones with security implications. I’d be happy if Apple rolled out security updates every week whether or not they threw in a few refinements in existing apps. Some of the updates seem very narrowly focused, as if Apple felt compelled to fill up the shopping bag to justify the update.

If Apple rolled out security fixes weekly they could spend more time to make feature improvements more substantial. I understand the notion of continuous integration and release but so many of these tiny changes seem inconsequential. Too much churn.

Security features once a week (or immediately to react to a zero day) and feature updates every two or three months or so. Just my opinion.

Installed 18.5, then updated all apps. Now Google's Chrome browser is really rough on facebook, in landscape mode, constantly re-sizing and jumping vertically forward and back, making it almost useless.  I guess I should have known better than to fix (update) something that wasn't broken.

Chrome and Facebook are broken on the Mac ecosystems by design.
