Outside of the stated guidelines for regular commentators, I assume that they have their own internal guidelines as to when banning a user is warranted. I also assume there needs to be some arbitration from the moderators for banning to occur. While I've certainly had many salty comments removed for calling out posters like █████, ████, and ██████ for making untruthful and/or bigoted comments, I have never trolled anyone. Still, if I didn't curtail my calling out certain posters they way that I did I think I could get my account banned simply because it's more trouble than it's worth to delete or edit my comments when they violate the guidelines. I'm trying to just ignore them at this point since they probably do feed on negative replies and I think it was Wesley that stated that reasonable dialogue with them isn't possible.
When I first joined AI he forum software used vBulletin which included a feature called Goes to Coventry, IIRC. The user wouldn't be blocked from logging it, reading, or posting, but no one else could see their comments.

Trump says all iPhones sold US must be made in the USby the end of June, or he’s going to slap a 25% tariff on imported iPhones. Ok. Got a response to that, or do you just bloviate about there being a playbook without any understanding of what it would be? Given that it's impossible to open a US iPhone factory in a year or two, no matter the capital expense, what is the response from Apple supposed to be when the demand is for a factory to open in a few weeks?

I don't believe the constitution allows anyone to level a tariff on one company alone (unless it happens to be a monopoly). Satan is supposed to be devilishly cunning and smart. American Satan, on the other hand, is incredibly ignorant and stupid. When all this is over and he has gone back to the nether world, I hope there are enough pieces left lying around to fix the country. I fear there won't be.

This is off topic and you can always email any staff if you want to raise an issue, but I'll answer this here once. We're always updating the rules. Look a the rule sheet. Mentions of "fake news" didn't exist at one point. Also, look at the pinned topic in the forums about political content. That's us explaining our strategy.
Users are allowed to have opinions, even if they are wrong. We are just forum moderators, not arbiters of justice and truth. If a post is at least close to the topic, isn't insulting an individual, and follows the rules, it can stay up. We're not going to delete comments just because we or our forum members disagree. And we're not going to see every comment ever, so if you see a comment that violates the rules, it isn't because we chose to leave it up, but that we missed it. So flag it for us.
We've provided users with tools. Ignore someone if you believe they're never going to say anything you want to see or interact with. Report posts when they violate the rules. Or, at a minimum, use the dislike function to show other users that the post isn't representative of the forum as a whole. If you choose to respond, do so respectfully, even if the person you're responding to won't show the same care. Evidence, kindness, and straightforward thinking are the perfect weapon against ignorance and hate.
Don't meet them on their level. Don't try to convince them or change their mind. Discuss, share your opinion, or don't. If you've ever argued with a child, you'll understand it is a waste of time.
If you believe you have an idea for how the moderation team should make decisions on certain posts, feel free to share it. This is a complicated matter, and while certain folks here seem hell bent on worshipping an entity, we can't just ban them for that. But I've seen the forum members here use the tools I've described to show they don't agree, and that works.
