macOS 15.5 Mail app and Google Mail aren't getting along for some users
Some macOS 15.5 Mail users are dealing with authentication issues when using the app with Microsoft or Google accounts. It's not yet clear why.

Issues with Apple Software are an occasional problem for users, but sometimes the reason for their existence can't be explained easily. Now, it seems that one such problem is starting to crop up in Mail on macOS.
A Reddit post on the r/mac subreddit by u/Jollylook explains the issuein a few images, in that Mail for macOS has difficulty authenticating accounts and accessing servers. In the Redditor's case, they woke up to see that Mail can't verify the identity of a Microsoft Outlook server.
They also received a notification stating that the app failed to authenticate with Google to access their Gmail accounts. Another user confirmed that they were having the issue as well.
While there are few other details about the issue, save for it happening overnight and affecting all Microsoft and Google accounts, they aren't the only one. A member of the AppleInsider editorial team has the same problem, with domain-affiliated email hosted by Gmail.
In the editorial member's case, they frequently discover their Google-related accounts don't authenticate. Others including iCloud do.
Mails still arrive, but they trickle in, and aren't always timely. Mails also sometimes fail to send, without a failure notification, and the mail, sometimes half-completed, sitting in Drafts several minutes later.
Troubleshooting macOS Mail not authenticating with Gmail
The issue involves a failure to authenticate with Microsoft and Google email accounts. There doesn't appear to be any recent service disruption to Google Workspace, nor related Google Cloud issues, nor for Office365 servers.
With that in mind, it the problem is clearly associated with macOS and the Mail app. Though we don't know the Reddit user's macOS version number, the AppleInsider staffer is using macOS 15.5.
Due to the relatively few instances of this happening, there are no real indicators on what needs to be done to fix it permanently.
However, in testing, we have found that it can be temporarily resolved by an actual reboot of the Mac itself. A force-quit of Mail will not cut it, unfortunately.
If the issue becomes apparent for more users, Apple may be more inclined to investigate and to come up with a proper fix. For the moment, it is an issue that a small number of users will be dealing with, one that will cramp their productivity.
AppleInsider will continue to monitor the situation. If you are experiencing the issue, report it through Apple's support channels, as Apple pays little attention to social media, Reddit, or other venues.
