A better partner for Apple would be xAi with Grok. They currently appear to be iterating faster than the rest and also have a lower user base than the rest which may mean that they are more open for the massive distribution that Apple could offer.
Yeah, no. I don't see Apple working with X on anything here. It reluctantly brought back advertising to avoid additional pressure and lawsuits from the current administration. I understand there are fans of xAi that seem to ignore its psychopath leader, but I doubt Apple could trust it with anything.
Would xAi really agree to something that required it to respect user privacy and not absorb data from queries? They'd likely just break whatever promise they make and take in user data on purpose, and when they're caught, call it a "bug." It's Musk's entire playbook.
If people want to hang out at the Nazi bar and use the Nazi-endorsed AI platform, by all means, but let's be realistic here. Apple isn't touching that politically charged garbage with a ten foot pole. I mean, how can anyone take it seriously when Musk says Grok is broken when it tells the truth, asserting he's going to have it fixed so it doesn't tell the truth again later?
Just disgusting incompetence Apple needs to avoid.
I've followed this post, and what interests me is not only the content, but that it got 9 likes. I don't engage in politics much on these forums anymore. That said, the comments about X being a "Nazi-endorsed AI platform" were really something. It got me thinking:
Do people actually believe that Elon Musk is a Nazi? That he did a Hitler salute? Or that the current admin is Nazi-esque? Or are you just trolling here? I'm honestly asking.
Having used Grok and ChatGPT, I can say I prefer Grok. I've been playing with it for a while now. No argument that it gets things wrong, of course. A few weeks ago, I asked it a closed-end question on a subject with political implications. The question was to quantify something....I don't recall what it was. But it was merely a "how many X" type thing. Grok went off on this tangent and editorialized about the political dimension of the issue. It kept making subjective claims, and kept backing off and recalibrating when challenged. I finally dropped a bunker buster on it, calling Grok out directly for its behavior. I told my robot friend (what I call it) it was simply asked a factual question, but it did all of the aforementioned things. The funny thing is....Grok surrendered. It told me I was right and did the AI version of "man, things got crazy back there...I shouldn't have done that."
Crazy that the stock is up on this news, because it officially confirms that Apple ideas way behind.
Is it (as the article says) true, that ChatGPT or Anthropic will run on device, so that they don’t get API data from Apple?
Otherwise, it is no good news for Apple for long term.
First point: no, this confirms nothing about Apple being "way behind"
Second: ChatGPT already runs via Siri without getting data from Apple or the user. Private Cloud Compute is server side, but independently verified to not be storing user data.
Third: How is giving users access to more private and secure models using Apple technology a bad thing for Apple?
I have to concur with Wes on this one. Apple has an incredible advantage across their product lines by having deep integration between their software, their hardware, and their services. Apple's forays into AI and their primary focus on leveraging Apple Intelligence should take advantage of those connections and play to their strengths. Another strength that plays in Apple's advantage is the trust they have established with their user base by staying true to their privacy and security promises.
I use ChatGPT every day but I do not trust ChatGPT to the same degree that I trust Apple. ChatGPT may in fact be an equal to Apple when it comes to privacy and security, but I have a history with Apple and so far they've lived up to my expectations. ChatGPT still has to prove itself to me and I have no evidence one way or the other because our relationship has only just started.
I absolutely do not need a version of Siri that is a replacement for ChatGPT or Copilot. I already have those tools in my toolbox and I know they cannot go as deep into my hardware, software, services, data, activities, preferences, etc., that Apple can. I will keep using those tools for what they do best. I want Siri, or whatever it's called, to be able to bring automation, control, insight, and most importantly general "help and assistance" in areas that affect my life, my lifestyle, my health, my awareness, my safety, my time management, my entertainment. etc. Apple's devices and services are closer to me in many more facets of my life than any other "intelligent" agent or chatbot I can think of.
Apple needs to play to their strengths. The original Siri was never built to take on the broad scope of quality-of-life assistive tasks that can truly make a difference in our lives. The last thing I want Apple to do is to direct their efforts towards displacing the AI assistants that we now see as best-of-breed. That would be setting their sights way too low. If Apple integrates AI services like OpenAI/ChatGPT into their products it would definitely fill out the sorts of things that take place at that level, but it wouldn't complete the much larger scope of what Apple is able to do based on their intimate understanding of their customers as non-artificial individuals and what they can do to improve their customer's lives.

First, the fact that Apple has to outsource Siri to a competing AI is the very definition of Apple being way behind. Do you think this was Apple's first pick.
Second, the very fact that Apple is looking at ChatGPT vs. Anthropic shows that Apple's initial plan to have a device-based AI was completely misguided. I have posted about this before. It is illogical to focus on a device-based Siri when every other AI framework requires significant computing resources and are server based. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Apple's desire to emphasize privacy, but if Apple is behind on AI, you don't play catch up by creating additional obstacles for itself. Develop ta server-based approach first and then work on a mini, device-based approach second.
Apple has completely screwed up Siri and HomeKit. I swear that no one in Apple uses HomeKit. Just this afternoon, I tried to use Siri to turn off a light in another room. I was right next to HomePod mini, and it said, "I can't find that device in your home." WTF! It is 100% listed on my HomeKit home. I was next closest to my MacBook Pro, so pressed the Siri icon and made the same request. "I am having trouble connecting to the network." WTF! I am able to surf the internet, so it is indeed connected to the network. So, the next closest was my iPhone, so I just opened up Home and turned off the light via the app. So, indeed the device is in my Home, and before anyone comments, I am on th latest firmware/OS and am using the current HomeKit framework. WTF, Apple! This is how broken Apple has made Siri and HomeKit. Embarrassing. But, what is even more embarrassing is that NO ONE has lost his/her job for it. I don't usually push for people to be fired, but people need to be held accountability at Apple. So, Tim Cook should be terminated for his lack of leadership because a fundamental part of leadership is holding people accountable.

I'm not trolling, no. And it isn't an original idea either. And yeah, I've seen a lot of analysis on Grok... it's very mid as far as AI goes. Likely similar levels to the Meta AI that's more or less flopped too.
Musk, literally? No, probably not, he's lacking a spine to have any real convictions. Most of his outward actions are bluster. After listening to a lot of people on the subject, like historians, experts on Nazis, the Nazis themselves, and experts on Musk, the consensus is basically he did a Nazi salute on purpose, the timing, angle, hand, and everything were perfectly reflective of the salute. But he didn't do it to say "I'm a Nazi" he did it to say "lolz look what I can get away with, I'm a funny troll." The point is, he did it, and the Nazis celebrated.
As for X? It's full of self-proclaimed Nazis and white supremacists that loudly declare X their home. It's the only platform they can be vocal because such hate speech is kicked off of proper platforms that do moderation. So, yeah, if you let Nazis into your bar, it has become a Nazi bar. I don't make the rules.
As for the administration? Well, that's a touchy question. Secret police, concentration camps, and military action against citizens are straight out of the Nazi/authoritarianism playbook. If it walks like a duck. But hey, we'll have different opinions on this. I'm not here to fight you, just letting you know my thoughts.
I wanted to answer your question honestly, but let's try not to let this become a big derailing debate. You're welcome to respond civilly, because I know you can, but if anyone comes out of left field with some wild stuff, I'll evaluate deleting the comment to keep things from escalating.
I'm not one of those people that rejects and ignores the people I disagree with. There are people in my family who think closer to your side of things. I find it interesting and I like learning about that point of view, which is why I get my information from a variety of sources, not some news org. I am aware that individuals in a forum or in my family are not directly responsible for what's going on in the world right now. Though, I do find it confusing when they can see such terrible things and excuse it as necessary. That's what hurts most.
Apple Silicon M5 coming out in the fall or Siri being 20% smarter which would you choose and which one do you think the public would care more about right now? AI which is currently half hype, half fad and is unprofitable currently for everyone other than Nvidia, or Apple Silicon and the five operating/ecosystems being better than they were last year without AI is probably more important long-term than Siri being like Robbie the robot in Forbidden Planet.
Apples path is going to be longer because they are carrying the load of software and hardware in house that’s just the way it is and there is no shortcut.
Siri needs to be 200% smarter. We don't need more processing power, just so things are 5% faster. A more capable Siri enables all current Apple products to work better and opens up new opportunities like that unannounced home device. IMO, Apple Intelligence is all hype right now because it is all useless. Artificial Intelligence is useful because I love using Grok even though it gets things partially incorrect 1/3 of the time, but Apple isn't developing an "AI" per se; it is developing an assistant.
Crazy that the stock is up on this news, because it officially confirms that Apple ideas way behind.

This might be a case where the market already believed Apple is way behind and the stock is up because this indicates Apple might do something about it.
Apple can be successful using inputs from other firms. They sold a lot of Macs using Intel processors, for example. For an older example, the enabling technology for the original iPod was a 1.8" hard drive from Toshiba.
Historically, the key to Apple's success has been the successful designs of *products* that combine those various inputs in a compelling way.
To my way of thinking, this is the real concern with Apple right now. They are having product design difficulties. I wouldn't be concerned if they designed a compelling new Siri that relies on someone else's LLM. I am concerned that they haven't designed a compelling new Siri.
With Siri positioned on our devices and with access to our home's HomeKit devices, I am absolutely concerned about Siri using someone else's LLM because of privacy and security concerns. I specifically chose HomeKit over Alexa and Google Home because of encryption and higher level of security, I use Matter because it is my understanding is that they chose the HomeKit model as a starting point. It is frustrating that Apple with billions of dollars in the bank is unable to focus on more than a couple of product development at a time. We users have pointed out Siri's limitations and lack of attention for more than a decade now and were ignored. Gee, I wonder how things would be if Apple had given just a little thought on how to develop Siri before now. Apple is the dumbest, wealthiest company in the world. Fire Tim Cook!

well said. Grok is incredible. its iterations are fast and furious and what you described here is pretty amazing. its unfortunate that the other poster has bought into the anti-Elon propaganda but unfortunately, I would have to agree that Apple has likely also bought into this BS narrative and won't touch X.ai, no matter how good it is. Fair enough, too much at stake to invite controversy.
I also believe that Apple really must own the memory implicit to agentic AI on personal devices. no matter what model is running in the background, all results should be forever memorialized on apple servers and instantly and seamlessly adapt to a change in models. any breakage and consumers will be utterly ripshit especially as their lives become more and more entangled in the benefits that truly deep personal knowledge across all devices (including robots?) will bring to everyone. once that happens, there will be even less platform arbitrage than there already is....

Third: How is giving users access to more private and secure models using Apple technology a bad thing for Apple?
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence company. If they want to figure out the identity of a user without an email address or IP address I'm willing to bet they can.
Well, the biggest problem with this statement is that they've got a deal saying that they won't access or use any data submitted by users via Apple. Second, I really don't understand what your statement is trying to convey... that OpenAI has some kind of magical superpowers thanks to its AI? That's not really what AI is or does.
Nothing magical about it. Also you aren’t given a guarantee of privacy. Apple doesn’t purchase a surety bond on their customer’s behalf that indemnifies them if their privacy is breached.
Crazy that the stock is up on this news, because it officially confirms that Apple ideas way behind.

All the way back in the mid90s they were able to write code that used stylometric analysis to identify the anonymous author of the book Primary Colors. That was with the technology of 30 years ago.
So... Apple is way behind with their Siri strategy. Anthropic and Apple do not agree on financial terms. Anthropic wants to get multibillion dollar fees per year. Apple does not want that..
As Apple asked Anthropic or OpenAI to train their data, Apple needs to pay.
Well.....If Apple had invested those money in Siri or their own LLM which they would pay for Anthropic or OpenAI, Apple would have been ready with Siri already.
Poor Tim.. as CEO, he is just a disgusting guy for his Siri failure.
Yeah... Siri reminds me of Apple Map.. First rely on 3rd party. Later, Apple launches their own map.

Kudos. Your opinions and beliefs about Apple and AI capabilities have changed a lot over the past year. We all are far more educated on the topic than we once were.

I was trying to give some benefit of the doubt to Grok because it happened to be an AI on X, but Musk's interference with how it answers questions has taken shape in the past two days. It is now spewing anti-Jewish sentiments, Nazi talking points, and explaining how Musk never hung out with Epstein from the first person point of view.
Whatever Grok might have had going for it in terms of technology has been spoiled by literal Nazi propaganda and the injection of extremist views so it won't contradict Musk. What a shit show. Any person, especially Republicans, whom I respect btw, should be able to see this and be disgusted by it.
Anyway, sorry for the later update, but weirdly relevant given what we talked about literally five days ago.
