The iPhone 17 Air is expected to achieve its slim profile both through redesigned components, and a compromise on the battery life of the device. Now leaker Majin Bu claims to have images of the battery, and to know its capacity.

In his full blog post, Bu says that he has been told that the capacity of the battery is 2,900 mAh. The most recent rumors have put it at 2,800 mAh.

For comparison, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace the iPhone 16 Plus in the lineup, and that has a battery capacity of 4,674 mAh. Of the current lineup, the base iPhone 16 has the lowest capacity at 3,561 mAh, although the iPhone 16 Pro is not significantly more at 3,582 mAh.

As for the physical battery, Bu's images show one appears to be encased in steel. This fits with how the iPhone 16 Pro introduced a steel case for its battery, to help with cooling.

The new images do resemble the iPhone 16 Pro battery in its steel finish. They also feature an L-shape design that is very approximately the same as on that current model.

This all said, the provenance of the images is impossible to prove. A reverse Google image search didn't turn up anything -- but there are very similar metal shapes that could easily be repurposed for the sake of this leak. Apple also isn't the only smartphone manufacturer that uses L-shaped batteries.

Note that Bu has a mixed track record for accuracy. He's previously claimed that iPhone 15 would get two front-facing cameras, and that the iPhone 16 Plus would have a lower capacity battery than its predecessor.

With the 3800 mAH estimated size, and Samsung's Galaxy Edge/iPhone Air dupe having a 3900 mAH battery, even if this leak is baseless, it will probably turn out to be right or very close to it. Edge sales have been a bust and poor battery life is a big reason why--turns out people don't prioritize a thinner phone over battery life. Who'd have thunk it?

Yeah, battery more important than how thin it is.  But,  I’m more interested in the weight of the new model.  I believe the “air” name signifies something being light weight.  We’ll see.
