In the summer when I run a lot (about 10k a day) it sucks having hair longer than a few inches. I usually keep the sides pretty short. When it's short, I'll go out when it's as hot as 95. Just one month of growth, though, makes 85 tough.
One of the things I love is getting my winter cut shaved off for the summer. I don't go buzzcut oranything, but I love the feel of all of that hair being sheared off behind my ears.
My hair grows at about an inch every 4 weeks. I cut my hair really short, and if I don't go back within a month the hair in back will be way too long.
I just don't bother with my hair anymore. If I leave it medium length, some of it sticks straight up. I just get it pretty much buzzed down to under an inch. No spray, gel, wax can keep it down anyway.
I eat a lot of meat. I bet meat eaters have faster hair growth!

I believe that's probably true, with the high protein intake and all. Anyway, I a similar hair problem. Most white folks have pretty fine hair, often kind of sparse. Mine is coarse and damn thick. It's tough to control unless it's pretty short.
Although I prefer to get it trimmed and shaped every six months, it is not unusual to go a year or more. I have had it almost all the way to my butt, but my hair is naturally curly and when it gets that long it pulls the curl out and it just looks fried. I prefer to keep it somewhere between just below the shoulders and mid-back.
I have always disliked getting my hair cut. The only thing that was good about it was the nudie magazines. But now they don't even have those anymore. Political correctness in the barbershop.
So I delay as long as I can. Once every three months for me.
