Jobs once commented that everyone (meaning MS of course) was about 2-3 years from developing something like Quartz or Quartz Extreme, I can't remember which exactly. Well, how long has it been? And how many man-years?

It seems so much like they found something cool and intelligent and made it a useless toy. When I hand a piece of paper to somebody it may move a little side to side, but it doesn't do the wave.

that would have been at last years WWDC when QE was first unveiled.

Longhorn isn't scheduled to ship until at least 2005.

so Jobs was pretty much right.

Apple should just add a little check box buried deep within the preferences that makes windows wiggle. QE could probably be programmed to do that in about 30 seconds. Then we could all do it for 5 minutes and shut it off.

Although Mac OSX looks much nicer than Longhorn, the thing that concerns me is that it sure looks smooth, (dare i say) smoother than the Quartz effects in OSX. We'll see where panther leads to ...

Yeah, but Quartz always looks smooth on Apple's demo machines (especially Steve Jobs') too.
