I have no idea; it is much easier to know what, rather than when. "When" is much more complicated when you're talking about a significant piece of engineering (hardware, software, etc.).

Sooooooooooo... Tell us more about the "what" then please.
"We'll offer them as soon as the slot-loading drives are available," he said.

The article says there are no slot-loading DVD-R drives available for laptops yet but we know better don't we? Indeed, Panasonic announced them about a month ago and they are currently in production. They are due to be available towards the end of the year.
You guys can argue forever that it is possible for apple to upgrade the PB before christmas, and I understand your points on the subject. I just don't think it's going to happen because I see no chip to be put into them. Maybe they will do some little upgrade of 100mhz but come on even the towers have been upgrading more that the lately. ... I truly think we will have a substantial upgrade to the PB's next year along with the towers. Really I do...

No chip? Um, the 800mhz becomes the low end and the 933 becomes the top. And then there's the 933 &1.0ghz, and then the 1.0ghz & 1.2ghz and by then the G4+ that comes out in jan should take the PB into 1.4ghz-1.6ghz and then....
Sorry, but if we do and probably will get an update in 2 weeks, there's no way we will see an update in Feb. More likely May or July.

There's still going to be a Macworld Tokyo in March right?
Maybe?...But it seems all these dates are being pulled from thin air. I don't know for sure, but I really suspect apple will wait for a bigger better update. They need to have something at the beginning of next year to put the MPC7457 in. The PowerBook is the perfect place. The ones we have now already burn your lap. We don't need faster 7455's in them or we'll start cooking our balls.
So you're saying the new Powerbooks require "significant engineering"? No mere speed bump, perhaps?

In this case I wouldn't read too much into Moki's wording... From what I hear (and this could be wrong) the PowerBook updates are gonna be pretty 'ho-hum' as in don't be looking for anything too drastic in the way of changes.

Apple will get the best Bang for the Buck out of an unexpectedly powerfull update to the PowerMac. If they pair that up with an equilly powerfull update to the Xserve, and an incramental update to Jaguire then they might have the making for a real OS X coming out party....

Yep, this is what I have heard as well -- they will be nice improvements, worthy of purchasing if you're in the market, and competitive with Wintel offerings... but don't expect any radical changes.

The ship time for standard config powerbooks has just bumped to 3-5 days from the 1-2 days it has been forever (US apple store, no build-to-order modifications). For real this time. I'm hoping this means maybe the Nov 5th date is for real. At least it's some progress!

Yup, it's real this time. Just checked it out. 3-5 days. Maybe the guy who told me Halloween was right. Naaaa. Someone mentioned that November 7th was a big day for Microsoft and their TabletPC initiative so getting this out earlier is important from a PR standpoint.

So you're saying the new Powerbooks require "significant engineering"? No mere speed bump, perhaps?

Slightly unrelated, but just saw a comment by Joswiak concerning DVD-R in the Powerbook:

Some ex-girlfriends of mine would be pissed if I did that. Sorry.

the next rev (d?) of the ti powerbook
will have a built in slot that will accept
credit cards & there by ease your pain
by dinging you at regular intervals...
a possible add is a micro printer that
will print fortune cookie sized labels from
the other side whenever said card slot is used
thus keeping the masses happy
beat that
Woh! Apple is going to release a 2ghz G4 and price it under $2499?
