    My iMacs serial number on the drive door and the one in the About box match. So it is hard-coded into the circuitry somewhere.

    try to see the serial via the apple system profiler...

    For the same reason any older Mac doesn't display the serial number. The serial number's only on the sticker and nowhere else on the machine.



    As for tonton's PowerBook...no idea.

    and it was always a build number...not a serial

    Boy, you're out of the loop.



    Newer Macs have the Serial Number embedded in the chipset or ROM or somewhere in the machine. If you have a newish Mac , it will be available as well in the About Box. EVERYONE has the Build Number. The Serial doesn't REPLACE it. It comes AFTER it.



    I don't know when they started putting the number in, but it's a cool idea.

    quiete right...i AM out of the loop...now gimme that damn 15" albook so i can see the serial number!!!



    the one and only reason why this machine was built...the purpose of this mac...this serial number holds the very meaning of my life

    everything works with the Ti (normal) and the iMac DVSE 400 (normal)

    on the iBook 600 CD nothing works (not supposed to happen) and the rev. A iMac nothing works (normal)...

    iBook Combo 700. Serial Number visible just fine. And no, it has nothing to do with the build number ( ).
