Yeah but transparent aluminum is expensive to order. One has to fly around the sun in a space shuttle going at a really high velocity, land on Earth, refuel and find a 300 year old launch pad that's still in operating condition, then blast off and do it all over again with the sun boomerang thing (except this time go counter-clockwise to go forward in time).

On top of all that, the future Earth dwellers would be constantly pestering the crew about bringing whales with them next time.

Not at all worth it, IMO.

Well I didn't say it would be easy to get. Plus people will bitch about the mold marks anyway.

What are you guy's going on about now. Didn't IBM say, and show that when they first showed off prototypes of the 970 that it was like 3 to 4 times faster than a Power4? What do you think got us all hyped up about it in the first place?

I could see Steve using this just because it is pretty cool and the Star Trek reference. The G5 in a Star Trek case.

That was never said, AFAIK. You can compare the SPEC numbers for yourself. The 970 has a much better price/performance ratio; it comes pretty close to matching a single core Power4, I believe. But the Power4 really performs when it's running multiple cores (as it was designed to do).

Consider they are only taking into account ONE of the POWER4 cores. This bodes well for 970 performance if you extrapolate from these tests. The 970 will perform better since the core frequency will be higher (40%-50% more MHz) and the bus will be better adapted for a uni or dual processor with pretty speedy RAM.

Transparent aluminum oxide--close enough. It IS Star Trek. I want some to play with.

The Power4 package has 5500 pins. You will not see it in a desktop (and you shouldn't want to).

    Taken from the link http://www.hp.com/products1/itanium/...e/speccpu.html

"The uni-processor UltraSPARC III 900MHz cu server is a Sun Microsystems Sun Fire V880, with 8MB of off-chip L2 cache and 2GB of RAM."

You can't get a V880 with a single cpu as they use dual cpu boards with minimum 4GB memory. They can only run with a single cpu if the other cpu dies.

As usual another biased comparrison that doesn't compare apples with apples. (Not that sun is any better with its very average UIIIcu chip.)
