anything new on the display front?

I've been waiting to get a new flat panel display for a while now, but in order to upgrade I need a significanlty larger resolution than the 1600x1200 I'm currntly using.

Whilst 1900x1200 is a little better, I'm a video/after effects junkie and need more vertical res for my windows and timelines. Anything on the horizon to make me happy?

(and I don't just mean Apple, 'cos I rather like that Sony SDM-P232)

This should be in General Discussion, but you ask about upcoming displays. I dunno.

well, I thought 'monitor' = hardware and 'on the horizon' = future, so ended up here...

but I'm interested in flat panel displays... what's the technology up to these days?

1920x1200 is the largest conventional flat panel you can get. In fact, it's approaching the limit of TDMS, the signal technology used in FPs.

To get any higher res, you either go multi-screen or get a 2048x1536 21" CRT. And that res isn't really usable, it's really blurry, again due to signal problems (this time analouge).

So you've pretty much got one option. Dual Displays.

In terms of Apple upcoming displays, I doubt a new one will appear on the horizon for at least a year. The 17", 20" and 23" make a nice, sensible line-up. They all look the same too, and use the same technology. Considering the last update was in Febuary...

There have been several rumours about 30" displays with 2400 X 1500 resolutions. I'm hopefully waiting (not past summer though).

yeah, I remember those. 30" is a bit big for my desktop though. I use the Apple 23" at some places I work and reckon one more inch of physical size and another 600x350 res would do it for me

I think Samsung or someone makes a 24" but at the same resolution.

I really want a 23" Apple Cinema myself.

Maybe once the new 970's come out which like many here are waiting for.

One thing I don't like with the current Apple moniters is that they don't seem to have enough pixels per inch. I would prefer the next screens have smaller pixels instead of same size pixels but larger screen.

    Wasn't there a rumour of a 30 incher a while back?

Now. I'd happily pay two grand for a display that big.

Wouldn't mind the price drop that the 23" may get when/if the 30" shows up.

Oh and a 970 is a necessity for me to upgrade my 22" ACD.

Your kidding right? Apple just dropped prices by over $1000.00 on the 23, and cut prices all the way down the line when they did it. I think the prices are totally reasonable for what they are offering - which is the best flat panel displays at the best price available. And they are Cinema wide also.

If anything I'd say Apple will release the 30" for the high end customer priced at what the 23 used to be priced at before the price drops.

Then they will probably phase out the 17" all together, but I'd rather they just made that a Cinema version as well. Some people just don't have the room for that huge panel.

In all reality though. I have no idea when they (Apple) will be releasing anything.
