then when you're ready to try and sleep, start reading. keep reading until your eyes close. works like a charm, and if you can't sleep, at least you're doing something more productive than TV or internet crap.
You medium-ist! There is nothing inherently less productive about watching TV. Perhaps you just watch the wrong stuff.
On the other hand, you're right, late-night infomercials aren't productive... maybe a cure for insomnia... or enough to push someone over the edge.
here's a little head trick that sometimes actually works:
pretend that the alarm just went off and you were supposed to have allready gotten up . . .
it actually works, seems that you ordinarily let yourself get tired when you should be up . . .
another trick:
Don't jack off, or have sex but think enough about sex so that you get an erection: we seem to sleep with erections and the sexualized frame of mind is similar to the theta(sp?-beta) waves of sleep - that warm comfy feeling...
you can also just sort of humm to yourself (mental humm not sub-vocal) a constant sound, trying to approximate an imagined theta wave sound . . . thid sorta jumps starts them . ..
coupla ideas from someone who has dealt with much insomnia in his life

Hmmm...I would just be pissed-off at myself for being such an attention-whore and cock-tease to myself.

That's an interesting approach! Never heard of something like that, but it sounds compelling (and makes sense).
I agree with the suggestion made earlier about daily exercise. If you are just being a homebody all day (a common side effect of being jobless and out of the social loop), that's a lot of energy you aren't using up that your body expects to expend. At the very least, get out for a medium long walk or jog to kill some energy- find a BIG park near you. You never know- you just might meet somebody interesting out there (or get flashed or mugged- everything's gotta have a yang, right?).
