The Sulloway book is somewhere on my "should read ... eventually" list.
I personally suspect there's something to all this. I'm the last of three boys, and I observed very similar family dynamics with a friend's family, also three boys. Based on my extremely limited/biased sample, it seems to me:
1st boy: expects to be the favourite, can get presumptuous
2nd boy: over-achieves to try to compete with older brother
3rd boy: makes no effort to be the favourite, frequently rebellious
There you have it. I wouldn't even hazard a guess about the dynamics of female siblings.
Comments
Him: 2 marriages. 3 children, 2nd house (1st wife took the first), loads of baggage.
Me: 0 marriages. 0 children, 0 house (I live in my loft), loads of baggage.
And I rock with my nieces/nephews.
