Damn local. We sold out in the Upper Valley in the twin states (NH and VT) to some jerkface outfit from upper New York. I don't care about the damn weather in NEW YORK! And I don't get NBC on satellite. I miss Tom Brokaw but GUESS WHAT! I can't get NBC on satellite, oooo no that would compete with "local" news. Well at least the little guy won. But I haven't watched NBC for years. Good thing I caught the last good stuff as it apparently has turned to crap. But I still miss Tom Brokaw and the fleecing of America!!!!!!! </my little rant about no NBC on my satellite>
Was this supposed to be intelligent commentary? Because it wasn't.
Sure it was, you just didn't get it. Is any local news good? No. They're all the same. They all look the same. They report on the same stuff. Shootings, deaths, traffic and weather. So ... why are we fighting over saving a hunk boring bland sameness?
One of the better points I heard on TeeVee this weekend about this issue. Oh yea and the media weren't reporting on this at all this weekend on several different cable channels.

yea 'cause you know this whole "internet" thing isn't working out as a news and information source.
Don't say any media isn't working as news and information source only because you have never used it for that. Also, newspapers can be used as well for information services, not only for the page 3 girls.
Anyway Clear Channel can't be all that bad. They hired this radio host after he was fired from a public radio station (NPR) for speaking publicly. So much for free speach on public radio.
the girl in the big photo showing her bikinis and belly piercings, they are in the "good" newspapers such as Sun of UK normally in the page 3. After seeing how great Chicago Sun-Times is, I'm amazed if there isn't something like Samantha Fox* on page 3(or whatever page).
* any blonde with big boobs and with minimal clothing.
oh, and that is not like Macformat UK last page girl!
Uhhhhh? Have you seen 90% of the content on the internet? You know, stuff like this.
Give Peace a chance.
The Internet is still not mainstream media. Until cussing makes it to radio and nudity to network television, we will continue to exist in the dark ages.
If local news is "all the same" then so is national news. If it is uniformity you oppose then why the hell would you advocate a system that allows a few people to control the public airwaves?
Because FOXNews can kick out flashier infographics than your local outfit (most of which are run by major news networks anyway)?
I realize you've gotta troll for the conservative side, but at least try to think about the issues.

While I agree that such things should be more progressively adopted, I think "dark ages" is such an exaggeration it borders on inane.
So ... why are we fighting over saving a hunk boring bland sameness?
Actually we're fighting to prevent exactly this. Scott I know you're the knee-jerk conservative, but it takes a rare breed of conservative to support monopolization. Is this really what you're saying or are you just ignorant of the issue?
Someone prove to me that local news is good and worth saving in its current form. Someone show me that in any market the local news format is so differnet from the local news in New York, LA or Chicago. It's not. If it bleeds it leads, close up shots of mother greiving over death, <insert fake medical scare of the day here>, traffic , sports, weather.

Why does anyone watch?
So...this problem will be helped or hindered by media consolidation?
Personally I think we should liquidate PBS/NPR, and give all the money to public access and grants for local TV programming. Local public access should be at least one over-the-air channel, more depending on the size of the area. There should also be national public access channels, legally mandated to be carried by all cable and satellite systems.
Large media companies could be taxed in order to build this infrastructure. My emphasis here would be to create people who make TV/radio, not just watch it.
And the public access arena would also be a great recruiting ground for big media reporters/entertainers...
If a strong public access infrastructure was in place here in the US, we wouldn't have to worry as much about media ownership...although I do think we should still keep a close eye on Big Media.

FYI Chicao Sun-Times isn't a non-local newspaper.

We're not. So why are you trying to distill the argument to something so simplistic and irrelevant?

It's something we would all enjoy if it weren't for the ****ing puritans that keep our women clothed and country in the dark ages.

So cutting out the Dixie Chicks is free speech?
The DJ was cut because he refused to do hourly updates on the war like every other radio show was doing.

Why don't you re-read the thread and answer all of the questions you've been asked?
