Well, I stand corrected on some of the issues brought up regarding my other post. Resolution and other digital camera features aside, the photos still don't seem to be of a real product. They seem to be staged spy photos. I say this because if the person had enough time to get them to look at good as they do, then why don't we see more of the box, or all of the words. If they were rushed, I think they would have looked worse.

If you imagine holding the camera waist high to quickly sneak a photo, then why are they aimed so well? If the person had time to hold the camera up and look at the LCD (or through the viewfinder) then why are they so crooked and poorly cropped?

Whether this is real, or an amazing hoax remains to be seen. But the rush to decide based on a few unclear, out of context photos is what's so annoying. Proving the ever popular catch-22 here...everyone wants details on upcoming products (RUMORS), and yet as soon as someone gives us info we immediately beat them to death with ANGRY skepticism.

I hope all you "experts" are willing to eat your own ass when Apple announces Pal in the near future.

Look here for an example of how to create the illusion of 'Mac-glass' correctly. This 'hot air balloon/light bulb/fat ass exclamation point' doesn't pull it off IMHO.

[edit]: Additionally, I'm not an angry skeptic....just finding fault where fault is to be found. Sosumi . Maybe Apple just let one of Chiat/Day's interns whip this up and didn't care about how it looked....hmmm? Sounds like something they might do...

Most of the photoshop "experts" here called a bunch of real pictures fake too.

I'm sure they are real. The question would be if somebody printed those out at home.

I think they are real, notice how they also mentioned a small iPod like device. You'll also notice that looprumors.com and many other rumor sites INCLUDING think secret all posted about a 8inch touch screen type iPod shell that was in production for apple right now.

This is most likely what it's for. That would fit.

THE BOXES are probably all internal apple mockups and not the final shipping thing. So there is plenty of room for error here too and changes later on.

I absolutely disagree, the glass is gorgeously performed. The dot on the exclamation point is perfect. Not sure what you like was for because a globe is different then an embossed button like graphic. Rather compare the exclamation mark to the original OSX box.

if Pal does exist, it seems Gigawire may be the way to get there.

A number of things come to mind regarding this 'product'. If it really is a tablet like device, how does it connect to your computer? I'm assuming that Airport would work in the home/office but what about when are too far for reception? Dial up? Via a phone? Linked to this is the problem of opening applications - if there is no hard drive how will it open the word/powerpoint/etc file?

The second point relates to something Jobs said during the D: All Things Digital conference. Tablets were niche markets he said, but most people wanted a "small device which has copies of data already on their computer". (From Powerpage.org) It goes on to say that the ipod serves many of these functions. Could this 'device' be an extension of 'copies of data' idea? Not sure if this 'thing' is real or not, but it sure has brightend up my mac rumour hunting day...(forgive the spelling, I'm British!)

Listen Kid, I respect your work, but on this you're wrong (not product per se, but execution). Take a look at the upper half of the exclamation point...look at the harsh edge on the reflection. Now look at the dot. Another harsh edge. Now take a look at my link, or your OSX 10.0 box...nice transition from light to curve, subtle edge blending...come on, you more than most can appreciate this.

If you're primarily interested in AM go elsewhere.

OT: Thanks for the info, bought a Grundig YB400PE $130. Was looking for Travel Type.

    *cough**cough*

There are quite a few ways that Apple does the "Aqua" look. Just look at the Safari toolbar, the iTunes musical note, the Quicktime logo, the iChat icon and chat bubbles, the safari icon...the way Apple does their logo currently (the aquafied version.)

The ones the "Pal" logo comes closest to is are the iChat icon and Aquafied Apple Logo graphics. And no, don't throw me a screen shot of the Apple they use for the X Apple Menu, it's scaled down and doesn't show the highlighting very well.

The .Mac logo you reference is a very old graphic that has been around for a very long time. It is reminiscent of the old style (10.1 and earlier) aqua interface. The new style is very glassy and more modern.

That being said, yes, I did do some PS work on the Pal logo, but only to make it look natural on the white background (other option was a grey border where i cut the logo out - not cool.) I'm not saying I think this stuff is real, in fact I think it's all a slightly clever fake (bar the stupid kerning and skewing and such.)

Gonna have to call hoax sadly.

The really big honkin' image is supposed to be a photo, very close up, yet doesn't have a single halftone in it, so it was never printed.

Too bad, seemed like a neat thingy.

excellent point Doarnyiarn, however apples stuff does seemed to be kerned strange as of late, but he's right there is no evidence this was printed... you zoom in and in and you see a gradual gradient and hardly any noise... now yes it could be mostly from jpg compression these images are rather large tho...

but why in heck would apple make this, sounds like something I don't need...

Sorry if I am pointing out the obvious... but wouldn't Apple do the cover in Photoshop or something like it?

OK. If I get what you're saying, I should compare a 128x128 pixel image to a full blown print graphic? Sorry, been in the biz to long to even consider that. And, by the image you've posted you've illustrated my beef entirely. Even if the iChat icon is meant to be tiny, this new Pal thingy just doesn't have the finesse that the iChat icon has.....even at TINY sizes. You have to see that.

I only referenced the latest on Apple's pr site, which is usually current give or take a few days.

Sorry I didn't catch this earlier, guys.

There's already a longer thread going on in the Mac OS X forum about Pal.

Pal', Internet Service Software for 10.3 (with Pictures)

Please continue your discussion there. Thanks.
