Burt Rutan is like Steve Jobs in may ways. Yes. They both do what they do because it's what they truly love to do. It takes a special kind of person to side step the "normal" mindset and actually do something different/better.
Phil Schiller on the other hand would not know what to do once Steve was gone. Phil's a follower, nothing wrong with that, he's just not an innovator.
Steve is doing what he likes to do and doing it successfully. I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon. After all, Apple is "HIS" company. He created it.
Hmm...you think that the mac cult would die if Steve-o was no longer CEO?
seems like it would, a large part of the cult fanaticism surrounding macs is due to steve as an entertainer and demigod. The way he shrouds all Apple movements in mystery, the way he builds up hype for keynotes and events.
these trends have been changing slightly...I doubt will ever see MWSF '01 lunacy again, but still... We are certainly still caught up in some hoopla but I think the general trend is moving away from this stuff.
I don't think any other CEO or figurehead or ruler of apple would appeal to the fans in the way that jobs' can. Like him or not, he has certainly kept your interest.
Apple will hire an actor figurehead to be the "so called visionary captain" of it's destiny, when in reality it will be controlled by an Apple/IBM developed AI (called iAI or lil' Stevie) running on a set of X-Blade servers.

Resorting to degradation is a sign of delusion and jealousy It is also a sign of guilt. So what cult do YOU belong to?

The issue isn't about remaining interest in, the questions is who will keep it alive as we know it? Apple just isn't the same without Steve's influence. Apple was dying prior to Steve retaking control of it. Steve saved it. History proves it. Get over it.
There's no one who could replace jobs who would keep Apple as it is today. That's unreasonable to ask. Whoever replaces jobs would make Apple different, but hopefully just as good.
There's more than one way to skin a cat, and just because we are drawn to a particular type of innovation and style does not invalidate other forms of innovation and styles. Perhaps whoever takes over for steve will do an even better job, and Apple will evolve even further ahead of microsoft and linux.
My own fear is that apple will die after jobs leaves, becoming yet another sony/gateway/dell making clones with slightly outlandish cases.

First of all, you're assuming that Apple needs to be "kept alive", like some ailing patient on life support. This is the Wall Street fiction that keeps Apple stock low.
Steve didn't work some kind of black magic when he returned. A lot of the cutting was done by Amelio. Actually, Steve came out looking like the good guy when he promised no more pink slips.
Steve taught some lessons that Apple needed to learn. Let go of the past, streamline the product offerings, reuse as many components to benefit from economies of scale. He pursued a "boutique" model rather than a "commodity" model.
He does have an eye for top talent and no doubt uses his status in the tech industry to catch recruits, but Steve is not a one-man Personnel department. There are competent people at Apple for that.
He axed a lot of the free-wheeling R&Ders, and pulled Apple back so that we're better, but not always first.
A future iCEO will look to Steve's legacy as inspiration. And his moves will help to stabilize Apple for a number of years. Steve has positioned Apple very well for the future.
So Apple will not be in danger of dying simply because Steve retires.

It's just an interesting topic because nobody but Jobs himself knows what will happen.

but in the what-if world, maybe we could nominate Burt Rutan.
innovator. visionary. pioneer. designer.
inspires by insanely great example.
already has his own jets (and spacecraft).

Dean Kamen (Segway inventor) or Larry Ellison (when Apple merges with Oracle)

However, take heart though. Apple is all about planning for the future and someone is being groomed
