Wombling, what is your working environment, by the way? Video production?
Yep.

If you decide that Panther is not necessary for your needs now that's great. Use what you have and enjoy.
My iMac does everything I need it to do at the moment, which is to effectively edit digital videos at a professional level. The Macs used in many production houses running old Avid suites are ancient (over six years old) yet they still produce perfect results.
I'm all for upgrading an OS but these charges for what are essentially tweaks to X are rather steep. Then again I suppose I did get my iApps for free.

I don't need it, but I'll be getting it. How can I pass up having the latest Apple toy?
OK, your right I can't resist. Needed or not it's heading my way.
Yeah, Jaguar might do everything you need/want for now, but it's not always about what you can do, but how. Those who want a more effective OS, with less quirks and (speed)problems will need Panther. Say, if you use OS X at work, and Panther makes you 10% more effective (you can do 10% more work every day, or have to spend 10% less time, due to speed-increasements, Exposé, new Finder and more), wouldn't it be worth those $130?
Comments
1.) Finder, new, fast, yay. Might actually work with FTP.
2.) I have nearly 500 fonts, growing whenever I scour the web for more. I don't need to mention why this is relevant.
3.) Exposé will be *sweet* do I even have to explain why this increases usability and productivity by a factor of at least two?
4.) iChat audio conference lessens the need for me to get off of the line in my room to call someone.
5.) Xcode...that thump you just heard was about three books on Cocoa falling into my lap. Gotta have the (Lots More Awesomer?) tools.
6.) Speeeeeeeeeeeeed. (Not the drug! Well, maybe.)
Worth a hundred bucks? Yeah, man, burn, baby, burn.

Er, here's the list of changes from FreeBSD 4.8 to FreeBSD 5.0. MacOS X is currently synced with FreeBSD 4.3, in Jaguar.
Release Notes
That's not a trivial amount of tweaking, and that's *JUST* the BSD layer.

Who said trivial? So they're big tweaks.
It'd say: "Hell yeah!"
