The Quartz Compositor protocol can't be that complex; it's just bitmaps.

I can't see them doing anything less elegant and efficient than what NeXT had back in *1986*, where Display PostScript was sent over a network as a series of DPS commands to a client, ala X11, or, frankly, like printing to a printer.
Takes a fraction of the bandwidth, and is much simpler to do, if you have the rendering engine on both ends.
