Panther discussion belong in the Mac OS X forum.

There are already several threads about Panther here, but I guess this is unique enough to keep since it's about the *good* thinks people *like* about Panther. I'm moving in hopes that it doesn't degenerate into rants about the new features instead.

i want xcode so bad that the idea frequently (atleast twice an hour) causes me to spoil my pants. distributed compiling (whoa), [re]compile on the fly (yikes), and removing the linking stage (the LINKING stage!). i don't know how they do that last one (maybe i just misunderstood ol' Steveo, but freaking WOW if I got that right).

    Internet speeds are awesome.

    Spit and polish is great.

Finder is easier to explain with everything to the left now.

Software Update is cool (downloads major updates in the background so you can install them later).

    Activity Monitor is perfect.

    EXPOSE IS HOT!!!!!!!

    It's been pushed to runtime.

MacOS X has pretty thorough dynamic linking, but it's been a tad... poky. Methinks they finally got around to optimizing the crap out of it like they've been talking about since DP1. If the run-time linker is fast enough, then up-front linking is pretty much a waste of time, unless you are absolutely in need for speed... in which case you're going to be statically linking anyway. Making dynamic the *default* instead of the *option*, is I believe, what they've been able to pull off here.

The only linking that has to be done pre-launch of the app is a tiny amount for hauling in, for example in Cocoa, NSApplication. Basically a constant-time effort. Then when it's launched, you get the linking for what code it actually wants when it wants it. Think of it as Just In Time linking. It's not *eliminated*, just deferred until absolutely necessary.

i'm confused...does this mean that if you connect the harddrive to another computer or boot up off another drive/system that you can't read what in the home folder?

if so that is pretty nifty...what other OS's do this, i always believed this was one of the biggest shortcoming of security in OS's

that is exactly what it means, that without your name/pw, they will have to try and decrypt your information. AFAIK most encryptions have been broken with a "matter-of-time" sort of timeframe, but still it makes it a pain in the butt to run off with your laptop and then read your email/use your bookmarks/cookies to buy stuff.

    Exposé sounds orgasmic.

well 128 isn't unbreakable but i'm pretty sure ur rather safe unless somone is smart and has some time

i wonder what type of speed hits this gives...i wouldn't assume too much since most files in the home dir seem to be smaller (cept if u store ur music/movies/mp3s) there...that would seem to be a waste of CPU, but i guess its worth it if u need that kind of security

I am now running Panther as my live system

Exposé IS orgasmic, and I have created another user just to switch a few time.... Nice..

Saying that tho I did come in thise evening an it is clunking a little bit. I have logged out the other userm but there are still a few pauses.

If like me, you are a casual user and backup regularly I whole heartedly recommend giving it a go... even for a beta its fantastic. Anyone with specialist software, or that really NEED not to be having problems with their mac because its too important for work.... your just gonna have to drool and wait.

Well, the only way I'd get to taste-test Panther would be if I pirate it, but I won't discuss that here.

Heheh, and the switch user feature seems so cool, it just might make me want to create my own account to use it.

for all intents and purposes, AES-128 is (still) unbreakable.

if implemented properly, the speed impact should be minimal, the time to en/de crypt something is far less than the time it takes to do the actual disk i/o.

Exposé is definitely awesome, and I love the rearranging of the system preferences. The Accounts pane has been consolidated to contain what was once in 'My Account' 'Login Items' and the stuff for fast user switching. The OS itself is incredibly speedy for being a dev. seed.

    What do I like?

    *zips up flamesuit*

I like direction in which the new Finder is going. Seriously.

I like a whole lot about Panther.

Regardless of whether it is Metal or not, I totally dig the new FINDER. It is freakin' incredible. Faster, easier to navigate.

EXPOSE owns my soul. It is one of the greatest UI tricks in a looooooooooong time. When I spend a couple hours here and there in Panther, I use EXPOSE all the time. It is hardto use Jaguar. I find myself trying to use EXPOSE, only to realize that it doesn't exist. :/

I am the sole user on my TiBook, but I created an account just to mess around with Fast User Switching.

I tottally like the new Sys Prefs window. A lot more organized.

I set up a test mail account to use with the new MAIL. Freakin so much faster. I can't wait to be using this everyday.

Besides the fact that things aren't implemented yet, Panther is awesome. Great upgrade.

Honestly? I never had a problem with the metal appearance, except for the inconsistencies. I always thought the pinstripe/aqua white windows were flat and boring?

For something that is potentially 4 months or more away from release, I honestly can't find much I *don't* like. The new GUI features are really cool. I love how they've redone the tabs within preference windows and such, and I think overall the GUI looks better. I wonder if they could tinker with the title bars a bit more (maybe change the direction of the gradient / shade) but overall I like it.

About the only thing I can't figure is if they're gonna remain schizo on the metal thing and not simply offer it as a system wide option (on or off). That would be best I think. Make the most people happy IOW.

I just noticed that the blue highlight on the title of a file/folder when it's selected bends in to follow the words if the name of it is longer than one line. Like if the second line is significantly shorter, the bottom half of the highlight is shorter too, it's pretty smooth. They have done some very nice things with the Finder.
