The solution to your problem with the image being to dark is adding more light. If you are filmed in a studio you have so many bright lights on you would think you could get sun burn! . My point being simply that even the most expensive cameras used in television have working in concert with them a vast expanse of lighting to make the end result a quality one.
I have the iSight and all I do to get acceptable results is turn some lights in the background and it adjusts the overall white balance.
Here is a sample from my iSight:
This next picture is a screen shot taken by a receiving party. They sent me the file of the screen shot from how they see the image. You will notice the image is reverse due to the mirror feature apple gives us. The image quality is a small bit compressed and less crisp but in my opinion it is nothing to complain about I am very happy with the quality of the service!
Steve-o announces iSight. I say "Hm, cool, but isn't $149 a bit expensive?"
This poll is posted and I vote "no".
Alex tries iChat AV, does an audioconference, is pretty amazed by the quality and ease of use, and literally runs out to the Apple Store at 9PM and buys an iSight.
Alex proceeds to be disappointed by the HORRIBLE low-light performance. Granted, my lighting is pretty poor, but I like it dark.
Alex hopes it works better tomorrow with some natural light.
I suspect a DV cam would be a substantially better solution for me. And now I have an iSight to give to a well-illuminated friend...
iSight is awesome. My friends I conference tell me that my iSight is better in video quality than my DV camcorder and my iBot. And the sound quality on this thing is amazing.
Perhaps those experiencing video problems should return it due to some sort of damage? It's been my experience that iSight does alright even in low light situations.
It seems like iSight works very well in low level natural light, but terribly at night. Oh well, I just repositioned a lamp to sit a little more in front on me and it seems to do the trick.
Can an iSight + iChat combo be used to monitor my business premises while I'm away. Can multiple iSights (different camera angles) be used if plugged into a Firewire hub? Finally, can an iChat session (audio & video) be saved as a Quicktime file?

I don't think an iChat session can be saved to video, but using Quicktime Broadcaster let's you save quicktime videos using the iSight.
I'm going to pick one up in the next few months, probably after my G5 ships.
I figure it will save me literally hundreds of pounds I would have spent in phone call charges... My family live abroad for 6 months of the year, and I like to talk to them a lot, hence I have horrible, horrible phone bills.
An iSight could literally pay for itself in my household! However, I also have to wait until I move to an ADSL area in August... Until then I am 56k only. Man I miss my old 2Mbit connection

Yeah - I'm going to bring it down to the Palo Alto store tomorrow. Here is another shot with a 100-watt bulb shining in my face from 18 inches away:
Still out of focus, and a greenish tint.
It's interesting that if I hold a white paper up to the lens, then for about 1/2 second after I remove it, the camera opens up the aperture and then returns to the very dark image.
It shows a way of adjusting Hue, Saturation, Brightness, Color Temp, and focus of an iSight. I'm not sure if it only keeps the setting with ispq or if it is universal, but it may help troubleshoot your iSight.

Got a screen shot? Mine is terrible also.

Any Mac user is a friend, yes?
I'll take it
I'll even drive to Palo Alto to pick it up.

Yep nothing like an expensive webcam. I use my canon xl1 sometimes. I don't think you'll find a better webcam.
