I only go to Starbucks when I hang out at the local Chapters, but I'm indifferent to them, or else I would have to hate them. Crap coffee, popous naming conventions, inflated caricatures of coffee and tea. Sad actually. But, oh well. When I hit Indigo, I just use their cafe and it's almost as bad coffee-wise. But fvck the large format if they think I'm buying books from them after they killed all the retailers with their come on in and sit and read policy. Then, once the little guys were all dead, they started pulling out the comfortable chairs, kicking materials out of the cafe, etc etc... Well, Heather, go make a few more picks, I'll be the last die-hard sitting on the floor of ther main aisle bending the cover on one of those disgraces to printing know as a paperback, with a thermos of coffee for good measure.

In fact, I'm gonna get up early tommorow aand read a magazine in your bathroom, bitch!

Nothing, I don't drink coffee and whatever I drink, I'm not going to pay $2-4 to do so.

me too: nothing (coffee will f--k-up your kidneys in the long turn, just like cola (but at the same time, they are not as bad a Red Bull)).

would you pay $2-4 to drink beer?

then again, not sure that beer is an appropriate early morning substitute for coffee. unless one is a student.

Beer is just liquid bread... so Guinness is basically just toast, and toast is a breakfast food, right?

There's a sign in a local coffee house here (that does roast its own bean, quite well too - Strong's, if you're ever in the area) that reads (roughly):

    "The *true* scoop on 'macchiatos'.

No matter what a certain large Seattle-based coffee chain may say, a machiatto is a shot of espresso with a small amount of steamed foam, and a small amount of steamed milk.

What they're selling as a 'Caramel Machiatto' is just a vanilla latte with a little caramel sauce drizzled over the top for effect. It is *NOT* a macchiato.

If you order a macchiato here, you will receive the traditional style. If you wish to have the other drink, order a vanilla latte with caramel sauce, and we will make it for you."

Apparently they had hordes of ticked off sorority chicks complaining that they "didn't know what a caramel macchiato was".

    Philistines.

Actually no I wouldn't. I only drink socially and even then perhaps twice a year at a friends house on some occasion. I haven't been to what anyone would call a "bar" in well over 8 years.

If I had to choose between spending $3 on a beer or a soda, I would choose the soda because for $3, I better get free refills darn it.

I look at it as not being $3 for coffee, but $3 to rent a table and a power outlet for a few hours, with a tasty beverage thrown in. But dammit, I should get free WiFi for my 3 bucks, too.

As I said, inflated caricatures. Not to mention that a latte is drink for convalescents and children, and espressoo is had in the morning and after dinner, not as an evening drink, but anyway, I drink 'em non stop, so I won't say too much about that.

Give a shot of espresso to children? I think not.

I've been told that most of the frou-frou coffe drinks that we have here are things that make an Italian roll their eyes. My Italian friend says that our cappuccinos are really mochas- that Italian ones only really have foam. But she could be full of crap.

And yes, a macchiato is just a tear of milk and a timy dollop of foam

We don't have Starbucks. Although I was just as happy to get a drink from Starbucks as anywhere else. I read an article in the Wall Street Journal not that long ago that opening a Starbucks in an area actually INCREASED traffic to other independent coffee shops--because of the heightened awareness.

Usually I make my own lattes, but for a treat I like to go to Kahladi Brothers and get a double (short) latte with vanilla. It's also much cheaper than Starbucks--I can get my latte and my husband's Americano for less than $4 (including tip). And there is a distinct lack of yuppies.

Coffee really dosn't do it for me, but a lot of the people that I know go there and get just the usual non-fat mocha.

I guarantee you that there's a hell of a lot more caffine in the average coke, and everywhere you turn you see parents stuffing it down kids to shut them up. Espresso, my friends, has less caffine than almost any other coffee. Firstly, because the traditional portion, even when served tall, is no more than a shot, and secondly, because the coffee does not seep or perculate, water is forced into contact with it via a pump, thus cutting the actual amount of time that caffine can seep out of the roast. The thickness comes from the fine grind, and the quality of the beans and pump, it doesn't mean there's more caffine. Go check for yourself. "Latte" depending on your dialect, can be a breakfast dish involving hot milk, a drop of coffee for color and stale bread, think of it as Italian wheaties. In some towns in Italy, asking for a "latte" will earn you a very strange look from the local bar tender.

I always ask for a "grand late". I get a chuckle out of the bimbo behind the counter who stares at me in disbelief when I pronounce it that way.

    Like Dual867 I like:

    1) Mocha Valencia

    2) Eggnog Latte (yes, at Christmas)

    then diverging from that list:

    3) that "malted" thing, not sure which one (there are two)

but, if I can go to Caribou and afford the calories:

    4) a Turtle (the biggest of course)
