How will Apple introduce the 970?

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
While there's been a deafening silence from Apple concerning their use of the 970, its almost silly to believe they won't. I'd like to know how and when they'll break that silence. Barring facts, I'll settle for conjecture.

It has been suggested that the biggest problem Apple will face in introducing the 970 is that people will stop buying G4s. How can Apple avoid a dead zone between the announcement and shipping of 970 systems? How long will that dead zone be? What will Apple do during the dead zone?

Regardless of when Apple introduces the 970, how will it market the 970? Should it adopt the "G" moniker? Will it be depicted as a P4 killer? Will it come with an AMD style performance rating?

They will announce it the same day it ships, or maybe a few (2-3) weeks before that.

They eventually will not use the "Gx" moniker. On the other hand, 970 sounds lame. I guess they will introduce a completely new naming scheme.

Once Apple announces the 970 I don't think Apple intends on selling anymore G4s. Why is that an issue? They are not going to announce it months or years in advance, it will be as noted above, "hey the 970s are out, shiping as of now".

They will have a Special Event. The 970 will be introduced musical style with someone dressed as the chip. A tap dance would be nice I think. Immediately afterwood, SJ will announce the "immediate availability" of the new Powermacs with the chip. Two months later the first machines will be shipped. So-called Mac fans will bad mouth the new machines (as usual) and say they're too slow, too late and too expensive. (Stop me if you've heard this mantra before). Happy Holidays!

I think the 970 should be the official monika of the chip.

It will kick the G4 out of the 'power'Mac first and turn it into a 'POWER'Mac.

2nd. It will go die shrink .9 and kick the G4 out of the 'Power'Book.

64 bit Powerbook anyone? Yeah. You bet you would.

3rd. No reason at all why 970s won't be used across all Apple's line in iMacs and iBooks.

.9 970s could be single in iMacs/iBooks and duals in 'POWER'Macs.

    1.8-2.4 gig 970s in POWERmacs.

1.4-1.8 Gig 970s in Consumer line?

By first half 2004. Big possibility as POWERMac migrates quickly from .13 970 then Apple has scope to white wash the lines with 970s from 1.4 to 2.4 gig. Add to that the duals equation to further distinguish the Pro' line of desktops.

If not, the iMac/iBook may get IBM's Rapid Io G3 with mhz upto 1.4 and superior cooling to Moto's G4?

With the rumour about the 'agreement' in PPC ending (or Apple's agreement with Moto' 'ending'...), it wouldn't surprise me if Moto's next G4 revision ends up being their last in all Apple lines.

1 gig G3 altivecs on 200 bus across consumer lines? Yes please.

970 in Pro' lines? Yes please.

Consumer gets Rapid Io G3 after? Yes please.

iMac could go 1.8 gig .9 970? Yes please.

I wouldn't rule out an uncerimonious dumping of Motorola.

Still, eWeek murmourings of a Moto' G5 haunt the rumour corridors...

Not to mention that it would evoke memories of Apple's ill-fated QuickDraw GX.

(But then again, the legacy of the "Jaguar" name with Apple didn't stop them from using it for 10.2...)

Just my $0.02 (CDN, which is worth $0.0005 USD):

It's my guess that Apple will mix the 970 in a system that will mesh well with the assets that they've acquired from all of their acquisitions in the professional video realm. (Nothing Real, Raycer Graphics, etc.) It's no secret that Apple wants to go after Hollywood, so perhaps what we could see is a new version of the Xserve with the 970 specifically aimed at that market. I mean, they've been sitting on all of those powerful technologies they've aquired thanks to those acquisitions--they're bound to do *something* with it, right?

No doubt about that. But the question remains: What will be the moniker of the new machines?

To answer the question: "How will Apple introduce the 970?"...

Released from a helicopter high overhead of the Moscone Center at Macworld, with Steve Jobs heard to be saying "as God as my witness, I thought PowerMacs could fly..."

    Just one more thing... G5.

They'll keep the Gn thing going, just to have some kind of continuity.

phil shiller will come out onstage at macworld dressed as a giant microchip with a large "g4" on the front. steve will direct phil to stand in a particularly well-lit spot on the stage as he waxes poetic for a minute or two about how great the g4 was for apple, how fast, how revolutionary....then he'll pull a handle and release a very large anvil which will fall from the ceiling and crush phil like a beercan. painted on the anvil is the number 970. after a few seconds of dramatic silence, steve will announce,

"as of today, the g4 is dead".

steve will then go on to introduce the next big thing, but will end by saying "we're ramping up production now and hope to ship the first ones sometime in the next 2-3 quarters. Thanks for coming"

    Turkey = PowerMac?

Are you that old (er... like me) that you're referring to the Great Turkey Incident at WKRP?

Too much violence on this thread. This is supposed to be the season of peace, goodwill towards men (and women and children). By the way, it's Schiller not Shiller.

i suppose i don't really want phil SCHILLER crushed like a beercan. after all, he's IS a mac-guy and we need every user we can get. the anvil should probably be reserved for a real enemy of peace and goodwill...someone like michael dell, bill gates, or the late motorola microprocessor division.

in the spirit of the season, we'll skip the anvil...and use a giant ACME slingshot instead. much more humane.

POWERMac isnt very attractive, i don't think apple would use it, not visually pleasing, and i think they care about that type of stuff

"the year is 2003, intel has has dominated the processor market, and its now clear that intel wants it all..."

forget how the speech went but ya see what i was going for
