New iPod info

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Ok, I'm getting really confused. At first I read this about new iPods coming out at MWSF 2003:

They will get rid of the 5gb iPod. This will be the new line up: 10 GB, 20 GB, 20 GB Color screen.

Then I read that this is whats gonna happen. They will just update the 5gb model to have the wired remote and everything the higher end iPods have.

Then I read somethign about the iPhone, and how it will work with the iPod.

Does anybody know anything? Which rumors sound like they could actually be real? I decided to NOT get my iPod on x-mas because of all these rumors. I figured I would wait till Jan 7th to see what happened, then get my iPod, so I wouldn't be mad if they came out with bigger cheaper models.

Somebody, please clarify this stuff.

    Clarify:

iPhone: 90% chance. After 4 years with the same Sprint branded, big, heavy b&w screen phone, I finally broke down and bought a new phone and new service. My new service is T-Mobile, so there's a 75% chance that the iPhone compatible service will not be compatible with the T-Mobile network.

iPod: Chances are about 50% I'd say. I've had an iPod for a year, BUT, I just traded mine in because of the battery problem. So, although I haven't recently purchased one, I do have essentially a brand new machine. But, everyone I know that would want my second had iPod has finally bought one. That means Apple could upgrade, leaving me with the option of sticking with my new/old model, or upgrading and having two units. I'll say 50% chance for simple upgraded models, with a 65% chance of a really inticing new model I'd be inclined to buy.

PowerMac: 25% chance it's upgraded. I'm looking at upgrading myself, and the new machines would make me very happy. That means there's very little chance of a PowerMac upgrade at this time. I feel I have at least 3 months of patience in me, so I'd wager that an upgraded PowerMac is approximately 4 months off. That would also coincide with the school purchasing season I believe. Just food for thought.

iMac: 75% chance, with new models not available immediately. This will effectively eliminate the market for my now used LCD iMac making it nearly impossible to gain enough funds for my PowerMac purchase in a few months. All thigns considered, I'd say the chances of me selling my iMac in a buyers market combined with a PowerMac purchase right at the end of the current model's lifecycle are about 80-85%.

Monitors: This one is tricky. I believe that there will be no upgrade at MacWorld itself, but shortly thereafter, new models will be introduce. These models will not be significantly better than current models. When the used older models start showing up on eBay for cheap, it will tweak my interest just enough to convince me to sell my iMac and buy the PowerMac. That would take about a month of checking small dog and such, so things look like iMacs at MacWorld, available in February. New LCD screens in February and PowerMacs in April. My purchase looks to fall right in March at the least optimal point in time.

I think that just about covers it.

In the same vein, the first new gadget is (95%) certain to be a new airport base station / router sitting on an 80 gig hard drive for back-up, server, and seemless homenetworking.

Why? I just finished setting that up for good money.

so, let me get this straight. the liklihood of announcements is in direct correlation with how screwed you will be with recently purchased-yet-unreturnable hardware, is that about it?

that is by far the most logical argument i've heard yet.

Indeed. I was just about to comment that this is the best and most logical post I've ever read here. My God man, I wish there was more clarity of vision in these forums!

this is bad news for those who want an Apple PDA... I was about to buy a palm but I am waiting until MWSF to make sure.. this means that there is only a 1% chance of an Apple Branded PDA being released. Had I purchased a palm you all would have finally gotten your Apple PDA... Sorry <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Nobody on this site knows what's coming as far as a new iPod (or any other product). Don't be confused, just wait until Apple makes an annoucement (if they do) at MWSF on Jan. 7. It's really easy, see!

No, thats the answer to Life the Universe and Everything, to which we just dont understand the question properly, as it was analyzed by the Earth...which is after all a big organic computer... Did it convert the question into decimal, hexidecimal, bionary, or use some esoteric form of numerology...who knows.

Must be "bionary" data and I can't find a correct space transformation mapper for it. Damn intranet.

Some day in 2003 we definitely will see a complete redesign of the PowerMacs chassis. My guess is that the introduction of 970 CPUs will mark this event. And then Apple NEEDS to update the monitors as well (design-wise) because it would look odd with the newly introduced case designs. This is why I don't see new monitors at MWSF 03. But then again, I could be dead wrong and a 19" emerges in january.

I am counting on a digital lifestyle device, if it doesn't come, I'm going to break down and cry (not really, well maybe). I hear good things 'bout the iPhone...I can always dream.

Yes, if no iDevice shows up at Moscone Center in San Francisco, it will be very disappointing. I'm hungry for something completely different and new. Updates of current hardware should be announced with no fanfare and in between trade-shows. The flat-screen iMac was a real surprise last year, and worthy to be shown at an event like this. Please Apple, don't let us down this time.

apple won't drop the 5gig. The only reason they would want to, is if it wasn't selling. It was sold out everywhere during christmas so my parents had to settle for a 10gig. (boo hoo)
